That set the Yanks up to carry some momentum into Sunday, right?
Well, not exactly.
The Yankees aren’t actually playing on Sunday.

Was the Yankees’ game canceled?
No, the Yankees didn’t have a game canceled on Sunday.
They simply weren’t scheduled to play on Sunday, March 29.
Why aren’t the Yankees playing today?
The Yankees aren’t playing Sunday because of how MLB designed the season-opening schedule.
They wanted the Yanks and Giants to open the campaign in a standalone game on Wednesday night. That left five days between Wednesday and Sunday for potential games in San Francisco.

The problem is that the current MLB scheduling procedure sets up the Yankees and Giants to play just three games a season. They couldn’t play more than that.
So the league had the Yankees and Giants take an off day Thursday after their opener, then they played on both Friday and Saturday.
That covered the three games, and it left an awkward Sunday off.
The Yankees play in Seattle on Monday night, while the Giants go to San Diego to resume play on Monday.
If MLB had started the season on a night other than Wednesday, it likely wouldn’t have worked like this. But that was when they wanted Opening Night, and so that has set up this scheduling oddity.
