The Miami Marlins look to complete the sweep against the Colorado Rockies this afternoon when they send Max Meyer to the mound. Last season, Meyer went 3-5 with a 4.73 ERA, striking out 68 in 64.2 innings pitched. Meyer looked sharp in Spring Training, not allowing a single run while giving up just 3 hits and striking out 12 over 7 innings. For the Rockies, they’ll counter with the left-hander Jose Quintana, who went 11-7 with a 3.96 ERA, striking out 89 in 131.2 innings pitched last season. Quintana did not look sharp in spring training, allowing 9 runs on 12 hits and striking out just eight in 8.1 innings pitched.

Quintana is a veteran pitcher that put together some strong performances last season, and while Meyer isn’t on the same level as Eury Perez and Sandy Alcantara, it’s still promising that he could emerge as a solid 3rd option in the Marlins rotation based on his spring performance. Meyer is still developing and has room to grow, but there are encouraging signs. That said, it’s tough to trust a Rockies team that struggled last season and has opened this series 0-2.

Colorado is batting just .200 in the series, while Miami’s offense has been more productive, batting .281. Both bullpens have performed well, with the Marlins not allowing a run and the Rockies posting a 1.23 bullpen ERA. It’s not often you see the Marlins as sizable favorites, and while that reflects the Rockies struggles, both games in this series have been decided by just one run. It’s not always easy to expect the Marlins to win by 2 or more runs, but I think they’ll be able to get to Quintana early on and get the job done.
