The New York Yankees really want Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes.
Congratulations to the Yankees and their fans; they join every team in the league, including the Pirates, who do not want to give up their ace with three years of control still left on his rookie contract.
But the Yankees and Skenes rumors won’t stop, and most likely won’t end, until he’s either traded, signs an extension with the Pirates, or reaches free agency and chooses another team.
Even then, there could still be rumors that Skenes secretly loves Yankees concessions and wants to sing some Frank Sinatra.
So, realistically, what would the Yankees have to trade for the Pirates to accept their king’s ransom?

While some Yankees fans might hope that a prospect or two with Anthony Volpe in the mix might get it done, I am here to disappoint you.
First off, all of their top prospects who could be a need for the Pirates are being shipped over without a second thought.
Goodbye, George Lombard Jr., Carlos Lagrange, Elmer RodrÃguez, Spencer Jones, Ben Hess.
If the Pirates want more than that, they can get them. If Pittsburgh wants an understudy for Konnor Griffin, the Yankees will give them Dax Kilby.
After grabbing all of their best prospects, the Yankees would almost assuredly have to give up their best young arm, Cam Schlittler, for Skenes. While it’s been rumored that the Yankees already offered up Schlittler for Skenes, Schlittler’s evolution as a pitcher since then should be something worth a lot in the discussions.
While that should be enough, you also have to realize that if Skenes became available, every team would be after him. That includes teams that have better prospect pools than the Yankees.
So not only would the Yankees throw in Schlittler, but they’d have to give up Ben Rice as well.
In total, the Pirates would receive one of the greatest packages in sports history for Skenes, including several players who could become stars in the league.
And the craziest part about it?
The Pirates probably would still say no.
