Back-to-back doubles from Jack Smale and Jack Mathis in the bottom of the eighth inning produced the go-ahead and insurance runs as Wilkes University picked up a win at home, 6-4, over Drew University in the first game of a Landmark Conference baseball doubleheader Sunday.

In the second game, down two runs heading to their last at-bat, the Colonels scored three times to complete the sweep with a 6-5 victory.

With the first game tied, 4-4, Smale doubled home Evan Melberger. Mathis came up and knocked in Smale with his double.

Jake Miller pitched 2.2 innings of relief with three strikeouts to pick up the win and move to 3-0 on the season.

Mathis finished with three hits, two RBIs and two runs. Jeremiah Atwell had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs.

Jacob Cabria scored the game-winning run in the second game on a strikeout-passed ball to end the game. Nathan Loch, Mathis and Miller each had two hits for the Colonels, who extended their winning streak to four and are 10-1 in the Landmark.

Misericordia 6, Stevens 4; Misericordia 7, Stevens 3: At Dallas, Misericordia rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a tie game and win the first game of a MAC Freedom Conference doubleheader with Stevens.

In the sixth, Michael Duda reached on a sacrifice bunt, allowing Owen Daminger to score on an error. Brooks Kanwisher then doubled to left-center to score Duda with an insurance run.

Ben St. Pierre had two hits, one RBI and scored one run for Misericordia. Shane Patten and Duda each had two RBIs. Aidan Paduck pitched the sixth for Misericordia and got the win. Zak Lussier pitched the seventh to earn his fourth save.

In the second game, the Cougars used more late-inning heroics with a three-run bottom of the eighth inning to break open a one-run game.

Misericordia led, 4-3, going to the bottom of the eighth. Owen Cordner scored on a Duda sac-fly and Rafael Fernandez scored on a double to left-center by St. Pierre. Kanwisher singled to right-center to bring home Ethan Elmes.

Jose Seltzer (4-0) pitched the first 5.1 innings to pick up the win. Lussier finished off the game.

The Cougars extended their winning streak to seven and are 9-0 in the MAC Freedom, holding down first place one game ahead of Arcadia and DeSales.

Arcadia 9, King’s 0; Arcadia 13, King’s 2: At King’s, Arcadia’s Will Buchan tossed a seven-inning, complete-game one-hitter with four strikeouts to pick up the win in the first game of a MAC Freedom doubleheader.

Arcadia finished with nine hits, three of them for extra bases, including a Max Oswald home run to center field. Arcadia led, 1-0, after five innings and scored four times in the sixth and seventh innings.

Owen Kosar singled for King’s.

In the second game, King’s fell behind early and could never come back as Arcadia completed the sweep. The Monarchs finished with three hits, two from Mikey Timinski and another from Miles Carey.

Softball

At Madison, New Jersey, trailing by two runs going to the bottom of the fifth, Drew University scored three times and added an insurance run in the sixth to pick up a 4-2 win in the first game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader against Wilkes University.

Mia Butka had two hits, including a home run for the Colonels. Allyson Stafursky had two hits and drove in one. Olivia Dougher added a double.

Wilkes took a 1-0 lead in the second when Stafursky was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Butka homered in the fourth.

In the second game, Wilkes took the lead in the top of the third, but Drew answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to complete the sweep with a 2-1 win.

Wilkes outhit Drew, 7-6, with Maddy Maloney reaching on a double and Hana Cross adding a triple. Cross scored on a Stafursky fielder’s choice.

Misericordia 9, Stevens 1; Misericordia 5, Stevens 3 (10): At Hoboken, New Jersey, the Cougars scored twice in the top of the second and two more times in the third on their way to six-inning victory on the road at Stevens in the first game of a MAC Freedom doubleheader.

Misericordia finished with 13 hits, two of them for extra bases. Gianna Russo and Mackenzie Fizer each had two hits and scored two runs. Gianna Foreman had a single and two RBIs. Gabby Cruz (6-3) picked up the win in the circle, allowing six hits and striking out two.

The Cougars needed extra innings to complete the sweep, scoring two runs in the top of the 10th.

Kiersten Tinio doubled to left field to score Sammie Gallick with the first run in the 10th. Alicia Moran followed with a double to right-center to score Tinio.
