Boston Red Sox reliever Jovani Morán impressed during his season debut on Sunday in Cincinnati.

The left-hander threw two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk, while striking out two. Morán threw 25 pitches (16 strikes), and his scoreless outing gave the Red Sox a chance as the game remained 3-2 Reds from the seventh inning onward.

While Boston’s offense wasn’t able to capitalize on opportunities in the latter third of the ball game, Morán’s season debut performance presented a silver lining on the day.

Across 82 career games, the 28-year-old now owns a 4.18 ERA, 119 strikeouts, and 1.35 WHIP in 97 innings.

A product of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Moran was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the seventh round in 2015. He debuted in the majors in 2021 and spent three seasons in Minnesota, appearing in 79 games. His strongest showing came in 2022, when he posted a 2.21 ERA with 54 strikeouts across 40.2 innings in 31 outings. He followed with a 5.31 ERA in 43 games the next year.

Tommy John surgery caused him to miss all of 2024. The Twins traded him to the Red Sox in December 2024. Limited to two appearances in 2025, he logged four innings with a 6.75 ERA. After a strong spring, Moran earned a spot on Boston’s 2026 Opening Day roster.
