NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College baseball team used late-game heroics open its MIAC slate with a thrilling sweep of Augsburg University. Adam Rubin walked off an 8-7 game one victory (8 inn.), and Tyler Vandersall came up with a go-ahead double in a 10-9 (7 inn.) triumph in game two.
Â
Game 1 – Carleton 8, Augsburg 7 (8 inn.)
The home opener started grimly for Carleton (4-10, 2-0 MIAC), as they allowed the visiting Auggies (1-5, 0-2 MIAC) to get on the board first via a run-scoring error. Augsburg earned a 3-0 lead with a trio of ground ball singles in the third inning that plated two. Jorda Sivoravong upped the Auggie advantage to five runs with a two-run single in the fourth.
Â
Carleton was shut out on just four hits through five innings and trailed 5-0 as the bottom of the sixth began. Nathan Barnhart walked, Will Schnepf singled him to third, and Sam Chutkow scored Barnhart by beating out a potential inning-ending double play.
Â
Augsburg removed starter Austin Lang before the seventh, and Carleton jumped at the chance to face the bullpen. Vandersall reached on a leadoff walk, Reece Wellsandt singled and Sam Gossard walked to juice the bases. Pinch hitter Ryan Chang came up big with an infield hit, with a throwing error allowing another run to score. Rubin completed the first act of his hero turn two batters later, singling to drive in two runs and tie the game at 5-5. Carleton stranded a pair of runners, sending the contest to extras.
Â
Xander Stolberg had cruised through the previous 3.1 innings of relief work, but the Auggies were able to scratch two runs off him in the top of the eighth with three consecutive knocks. The Knights immediately had their backs against the wall again after the first two batters in the bottom of the eighth were retired. Gossard singled to keep the game alive, however, and substitute Jason Seeber slugged a double down the left field line to score him. Barnhart guided a hit to center to allow Seeber to cross the plate and tie the game once again. The center fielder stole second, and Rubin stepped up to the dish. The rookie infielder dropped a hit into center, and Barnhart barreled home to win the game and spark a bench-clearing celebration for the Knights.
Â
Starter Jackson Corcoran threw 3.2 innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out three. Stolberg earned the win with 4.1 innings pitched, conceding just two tallies.
Â
Game 2 – Carleton 10, Augsburg 9 (7 inn.)
Carleton got on the board early in game two when Rubin doubled, and Gossard singled him home in the bottom of the first. Augsburg took its initial lead of the game in the third, using a leadoff error and three timely hits to piece together three runs. The Auggies tacked on another run via a Stanley Regguinti RBI double in the fourth.
Â
The Knights had three runs cross the plate in the bottom of the fourth. The first four hitters in the inning reached via a walk, two errors, and a hit-by-pitch, with a run scoring on a Wilson Taraday bunt. Barnhart singled in another tally, and Rubin stayed white-hot with a game-tying knock to right.
Â
Chutkow began a big fifth inning with a triple that chased Augsburg starter Manny Weiss. Gossard followed with a walk, and Vandersall hit a screaming triple to the gap to plate them both. Chang pinch hit again, and again carded an RBI single. Barnhart would single Chang home later in the inning to give the home team an 8-4 edge. That lead would not last long, though, as Augsburg rallied to tie in the top of the sixth. The Auggies still had runners at the corners in an 8-8 game when Dan Avillo was summoned from the bullpen, but the junior hurler retired the final batter of the inning.
Â
Carleton responded to the visitors’ rally with runs of its own. Schnepf led off the sixth with a line-drive hit to right, and Gossard added one of his own. Vandersall ripped a double down the left field line to score both runners, putting the Knights up 10-8. Chutkow moved to the mound, where he worked around the first two batters reaching to nail down the game for the Knights.
Â
Ryan Kessner started game two, worked 4.0 innings, struck out three, and did not concede an earned run. Avillo picked up the win after his clutch 0.1 inning. Chutkow registered his second career save after working the final inning.
Â
Gossard returned from injury with a blistering 4-for-5 performance across the two games, scoring five times and reaching three more times via walk. Barnhart had a 4-for-8 line in the twin bill, scoring twice and driving in three. Schnepf finished 4-for-8 with a run. Rubin was 4-for-9 overall with a run, four RBI, and a double. Vandersall was 3-for-7 on the day, doubling tripling, driving in four, and scoring thrice. Chutkow went 2-for-4 in game two on top of his save.
