Mike Trout is back where he spent so much time.
The Los Angeles Angels outfielder leads all of baseball in Wins Above Replacement.
According to Fangraphs, Trout’s 0.6 WAR is the best in MLB through the first weekend of the season.
Yes, it’s early, but it’s also a cool, quick, turn-back-the-clock moment for an all-time great ballplayer.
Trout led the league in WAR in five consecutive seasons from 2012 through 2016.Â
From there, he had a few more special campaigns, but he also began dealing with a lot of injuries, particularly in the last few years. He hasn’t been close to his peak self.
Trout is a no-doubt Hall of Famer despite that. At his best, he was one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.

In recent years, though, it had gotten tough to watch Trout deal with all the ailments. And it became unclear whether he’d ever look like a younger version of himself again.
At least for now, he does, and it’s a special thing for baseball fans to watch.
Trout is 5-for-13 with seven walks to begin this season. He has two home runs.
In the small sample size, he’s batting .462 with a .650 on-base percentage, .923 slugging and a 1.573 OPS.
Of course, those numbers will come back down to earth. But how far? Maybe if Trout is a little healthier than he’s been, he can contend for an All-Star spot once again.
It’d be cool to see Trout rediscover some of the player he once was. Baseball is better when Trout is at his best.
