The Boston Red Sox appear to have decisions to make day in and day out with their surplus of outfielders.

The Red Sox surprisingly didn’t trade any of their young outfielders this offseason, and now have to figure out how to maneuver their lineup effectively. Boston has one of the most exciting players in the league in Roman Anthony, a former All-Star in Jarren Duran and two Gold Glove winners with Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela.

However, Alex Cora is still trying to work Masataka Yoshida into the mix already this early in the season. Yoshida’s defensive limitations and high salary leave him as the odd man out in Boston’s outfield, or so you would think.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora sent a clear message on Saturday that Yoshida was going to be playing in three of the next five games for the Red Sox.

“It’s not that easy, but I’ll make it work,” Cora said, per MassLive’s Christopher Smith. “And I believe Masa is going to play three out of the next five and then everybody will sit some of them. But as far as like the positioning, they’re all good outfielders. I think the only one who’s average is Masa. And we believe in Houston he can play left field there. You cannot just DH Masa because somebody’s not playing, and when Masa is DH’ing, then we have to take one of the other guys out of the game.

“So we have to be patient with it. And that’s the reason we need him to play left field. And he will play left field. They know the plan, so we’ll stick to it. And I think everybody’s going to benefit from it.”

The Red Sox lost to the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 in Yoshida’s first game, with the 32-year-old going 0-2 with two walks. Yoshida is not a bad player, but with all of the other talented players that Boston has, there is not enough room for the three-year veteran.

Boston constantly platooning players for Yoshida seems unlikely throughout the whole season, with The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal calling the 32-year-old a “DFA waiting to happen.” Fans likely will be frustrated with Cora’s lineup decisions if the Red Sox struggle early this season.
