Chapman’s Benson Smiley dominated on the mound in the Irish’s opening win 15-1 over Atchison County Thursday. Smiley tossed a no-hitter striking out 14 allowing an unearned run to claim the opening win.
The Irish offense backed Smiley scoring 15 runs on 12 hits in the five-inning contest. Aven Woods, Henry Corn, Connor Cote-Boss and Liam Garcia each had two hits in the opener. Liam Garcia hit his first homer of the season and drove in two runs. Cote-Boss drove in three while Deegan Leighty drove in two with a double.
Chapman jumped on Atchison County pitching early scoring four runs in the first with six more in the second inning. They tacked on four more in the fourth and added the 15th run in the fifth.
Austin Smiley, Benson Smiley and woods also had RBI.
Chapman scored nine runs in the first inning of the nightcap to go on and win 18-3 for the sweep of the double headers. Woods had two hits and drove in three runs in the win. Jaysik Bauman doubled and drove in two and Matt Zlotow had two RBI.
Cote-Boss started the game for the Irish allowing two hits and one run over two innings, striking out three and walking one. Austin Smiley threw one hitless scoreless inning of relief and Hunter Kidd allowed two earned runs on one hit, walking two in one inning pitched.
Chapman finished the day 2-0 and would then play Herington on Friday.

Champman baseball bounces Herington
The Chapman High School baseball team improved to 4-0 Friday afternoon by sweeping Herington 23-0 and 18-3 in a double header at Chapman.
Aven Woods tripled driving in three runs in Chapman’s 11 run first inning. Woods had two hits in the game, driving in four and scoring four times. Henry Corn had a pair of hits and drove in three runners in the game.
Chapman blasted Herington pitching for 14 hits total as they added 12 more runs in the second to win after three 23-0. Liam Garcia also had two hits for the Irish.
Payton Landerville notched the win with three innings of shutout baseball giving up two hits while striking out six and walking five.
Woods went three for three including two doubles in the nightcap while driving in three runs as the Irish completed the sweep of the Railers. Chapman scored three times in the first, six in the second, one in the third and eight times in the fourth for run rule win.
Herington scored once in the top of the first and twice in the third inning.
Benson Smiley had two hits for the Irish driving in a pair of runs while Henry Corn had two hits with three RBI. Deegan Leighty had two hits and three RBI while Dominick Krogman drove in two in the victory.
Corn started on the mound for Chapman, going two innings allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out four and walking one. Garcia pitched the final two frames, allowing two runs on one hit, striking out four and walking three.
Chapman is 4-0 on the young season and will host Clay Center Tuesday.
