Cal Raleigh delivers Seattle Mariners' 1st walkoff win

Cal Raleigh was given most of the night off for the Seattle Mariners on Monday.

That didn’t stop him from delivering the team’s first walkoff win of the year.

Raleigh, who entered the game in the seventh inning as a pinch-hitter in the Mariners’ designated hitter position, came up with runners on the corners and one out with Seattle tied 1-1 in its series opener against the Yankees.

While Raleigh has scuffled in the early days of the season, he snapped out of it by ripping a shot down the right field line, letting Leo Rivas waltz home for the winning run.

The victory makes the Mariners 3-2 on the year after they split their opening four-game series with Cleveland.

Rivas led off the inning with a single, then advanced to third when Brendan Donovan singled himself with one out.

The game-winner was just the third hit in 17 at-bats so far for Raleigh, who wasn’t in the starting lineup Monday after catching every game of the Cleveland series, but don’t worry too much. He was just 2 for 17 in his first five games of last year, and we all know how that season ended working out for him.
