Lance McCullers Jr. turned in his longest outing since 2022, working seven innings while allowing just one run on four hits with nine strikeouts to pitch Houston past the Red Sox 8-1 in Monday night’s series opener. Jose Altuve homered twice in the win while Yordan Alvarez and Brice Matthews also went deep. Altuve finished the night 4-for-4 with a walk, scoring four times.
Left-hander Ranger Suarez struggled in his Red Sox debut, surrendering four runs on seven hits before being lifted with one out in the fifth. Fellow Boston newcomer Johan Oviedo fared little better, coughing up four runs on six hits in 3.2 innings. The Red Sox got their lone run on Wilyer Abreu’s ground-rule double in the seventh. Abreu had two of Boston’s four hits and is off to an 8-for-16 start with a pair of homers.
Right-hander Hunter Brown gets his second start of the season for the Astros on Tuesday night after striking out nine in 4.2 scoreless innings on Thursday. Brown left early, walking four and giving up four hits while throwing 102 pitches. Right-hander Brayan Bello makes his first start for Boston. He posted career-bests of 166.2 innings, a 3.35 ERA and 1.236 WHIP in 29 appearances (28 starts) last season.
