ALLPORT — The West Branch softball team captured a big, early-season Mo Valley League victory Tuesday as the Lady Warriors knocked off visiting Curwensville in a low-scoring affair, 3-0.

West Branch’s Megan Eyerly got the best of Curwensville’s Addison Siple in the circle, as the two battled it out in a good, old-fashion pitcher’s duel.

Eyerly was dominant Tuesday, tossing a one-hit shutout while striking out 10, walking none and hitting as batter.

Curwensville had just two base runners, both coming in the top of the third. Briah Peoples broke up Eyerly’s perfect game bid with a leadoff double. Addyson Neiswender was then hit by a pitch to put two on with no out.

Sylvia Witherite then bunted over the runners, but Eyerly got a strikeout and groundout to strand both runners in scoring position. That proved to be all the offense the Lady Tide mustered, as Eyerly retired the final 15 batters she faced.

Meanwhile, West Branch got all the offense it needed with a run in the bottom of the first.

Mackenzie MacTavish was hit buy a pitch to open the inning, then Bella Nelson singled to Wos. Siple countered with a strikeout, but Haley Woodling then plated MacTavish on a groundout to give the Lady Warriors the early 1-0 lead.

Eyerly made that lead stand up, although her offense did tack on a couple insurance runs.

Battery-mate Lindsey Bainey blasted a two-out, solo home run to center in the third, while Woodling singled home Nelson in the sixth. Nelson, who was 2-for-3, led off the sixth with a double. Woodling finished with the hit and two RBIs.

Siple was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out seven, walking none and hitting a batter.

West Branch, now 3-0, plays at Bucktail Thursday, while Curwensville fell to 1-1 and is off until Monday when the Lady Tide travel to Moniteau.
