STRATTANVILLE — Getting a combined six-hitter from four pitchers and jumping out to a 12-0 lead, the Brookville Raiders baseball team notched its second straight win in a 12-4 victory at the C-L Sports Complex Tuesday afternoon.
Parker Kalgren, Zach Phillips, Tyler Barnett and Joel Burton combined to strike out 13 and walk just four with Phillips getting the win by throwing three innings after replacing the starter Kalgren who threw two hitless innings with five strikeouts on 26 pitches.
“The last thing we wanted to do with the weather coming was go into the break with a very scrappy C-L team and have Parker in the barn,” Raiders head coach Chad Weaver said. “So we had to win that game that was available to us.”
The Raiders were supposed to host Elk County Catholic Wednesday, weather-permitting, with the next game at home next Tuesday.
Kalgren, in his two outings so far covering six innings, has struck out 12 and walked two with no hits allowed. He went four innings in last week’s no-decision in a 3-2 loss at St. Marys.
Leading 6-0 after two, the Raiders went to the pen after that. They scored twice in the first despite just one hit in the inning, then put up four runs in the second after two outs thanks to two straight infield errors on balls hit by Kalgren and Ladd Blake. Landen Marrara then tripled home Blake.
Leading off the third, Trenton Colgan blasted a home run over the left-center field fence at the spacious Lions field to make it 7-0.
“Trent’s always been that guy with a ton of pop … so he has the potential,” Weaver said. “Trent just needs to put it together. It’s the same thing on a mound. His ceiling is extremely high.”
Phillips wound up getting the win on the mound, going three innings and allowing four hits and four runs, three of them earned with three strikeouts and three walks.
The Raiders made it 12-0 with five more runs in the top of the fifth as five straight batters reached to start the inning. Joel Burton singled in two runs and scored on Marrara’s groundout.
The Lions scored all four of their runs off Phillips in the bottom of the fifth, three coming on Lucian Sloan’s bases-loaded triple.
“I think Zach’s line looks a lot better if we make two very routine plays for him that we didn’t make,” Weaver said. “He’s probably going to wear a little bit that he doesn’t deserve in this one, but we were very pleased with the work he gave us and as a sophomore, wherever we put him, he’s produced and he is willing to take on any role.”
Paul Craig took the loss on the mound for the Lions, who fell to 0-4. He gave up four hits in three innings with just one of seven runs he surrendered earned with three walks and two strikeouts.
Alex Love and Kevin Mumford both had two hits for the Lions, who are off until next Tuesday at North Clarion.
