SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Through the first two weeks of conference play, San Francisco is undefeated at 6-0. The Dons also boast an overall record of 15-11 on the season, as well. USF looks to remain perfect in conference play this week when the Dons head to Los Angeles to face an LMU team looking for its first conference win of the campaign. 

Portland is one game back in second place at 5-1, while Gonzaga and Pepperdine are tied for third, each at 4-2. The Pilots are on a roll right now, having won 10 of their last 11 after Tuesday’s upset win at No. 15 Oregon. 

The West Coast Conference garnered some national recognition this week as Maddox Haley from Gonzaga was tabbed an NCBWA Co-National Hitter of the Week on Tuesday after being named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week the day before. Haley slugged five home runs last week and batted .737 for the week. 

This Week

On Tuesday, Portland earned another ranked road win in the state of Oregon as the Pilots took down No. 15 Oregon, 3-0, at PK Park. Portland got the win thanks to home runs from Brady Bean and Jonas Salk. The victory also marks the third straight year that the Pilots have beaten the Ducks. Earlier this season, Portland beat then-No. 17 Oregon State, 3-1. 

Also on Tuesday, Pepperdine picked up another win as the Waves beat CSUN, 6-5. James Dell-Amico went 3-for-4 with two runs. Daniel Patterson and Joshua Woodworth both homered for the Waves. 

This week’s action started with two non-conference wins on Monday as Gonzaga topped Nevada, 7-2, and Santa Clara beat San Jose State, 5-3. 

Conference action continues on Thursday. In addition to the USF at LMU series, Portland looks to stay near the top of the standings at Seattle U. The two teams tied for third place battle when Gonzaga hosts Pepperdine. Other series action includes San Diego hosting Santa Clara and Pacific heading to Saint Mary’s. 

Last Week

Portland picked up another non-conference win to start things last week with an 8-3 victory over Northwestern. The next day, Saint Mary’s garnered another non-conference win for the league as the Gaels topped UC Santa Barbara, 10-4. Makoa Sniffen, Ian Armstrong and Jared Mettam each collected three hits on the night. Last Wednesday, Gonzaga slugged past Washington State, 19-8, while LMU edged past Cal Poly, 8-7, both home victories. Haley belted two home runs and tied a program single-game record with five hits. 

In conference action last week, USF swept Seattle U at home, while Santa Clara also swept LMU at home. Pepperdine took two out of three over San Diego at home. The Pilots also took two out of three at home over Saint Mary’s. Gonzaga took two out of three on the road at Pacific. 

Stat Leaders

Current national stat leaders within the conference reside on the pitching side. Nick Bacura from USF ranks tied for sixth in the nation with six saves, while Alex Via from Portland is tied for 20th with five saves. Via picked up West Coast Conference Freshman of the Week honors earlier this season. 

Santa Clara’s Max Bayles continues to rack up the strikeouts. He ranks tied for 13th in the nation with 57 strikeouts. 

In the conference ranks, Jacob Johnson from Saint Mary’s tops the league in batting average (.418), RBI (32) and home runs (8).
