SEATTLE – Batting .500, there’s no Giancarlo Stanton in today’s Yankees lineup.
Call it part of the Stanton maintenance plan, as this was “day marked for him” to get a break, said manager Aaron Boone.

Yes, the Yanks have already had two off days and are moving into another on Thursday, ahead of the home opener.
As you know, a certain organizational caution accompanies Stanton with his injury history and the regular maintenance required on his chronic elbow issues.
In this early going, Stanton has looked terrific at the plate, with two hits in each of his first five games.
Plus, he’s been eager to run – including a risky (and successful) advance to second base Tuesday night on a (barely) wild pitch.
Anyway, Ben Rice is in there at DH today, Paul Goldschmidt gets his second start at first base – this time against righty starter George Kirby – and Amed Rosario is at third instead of the 1-for-14 Ryan McMahon.

It’s also Cam Schlittler’s day to pitch on this cool-rainy afternoon, and the canopy roof is on. Follow us live from Seattle…
Efficient
Cam Schlittler has retired 11 straight Mariners.
He’s at just 55 pitches as we go to the sixth inning, with the Yanks still leading 1-0. And they’ve already posted three shutout wins in the first five games.
Still rolling along
It’s a 1-2-3 fourth inning for Cam, who throws nine pitches in retiring the heart of Seattle’s order – J-Rod, Naylor, Arozarena – on two grounders and a fly ball.
That’s 9.1 shutout innings to start 2026 for the righty, nursing a 1-0 lead as we go to the fifth.

Aaron Judge’s bumpy start
Judge swings over a George Kirby 2-2 changeup with none on base to end the Yankees third inning.
In this Seattle series (at a park he’s mashed in), the Yankee captain is 1-for-9 with a soft single, four strikeouts and a walk.
Overall, Judge is 3-for-22 (11 Ks) to start the season, with two of those hits home runs at San Francisco.
Austin Wells: 4-for-4
The Yanks’ catcher is pitching a perfect game when it comes to ABS challenges, getting a strike here in the second inning vs. Dominic Canzone (who eventually Ks) with a runner at first.
It’s still 1-0, Yanks, moving to the third. Schlittler’s fastball velo has topped out at 97.5-mph so far on this 47-degree afternoon. He was up to 98-to-99-mph in his first start, last Friday, at warmer San Francisco.

Here at Seattle, the roof is just a cover (we’re not indoors) at one of the game’s best ballparks.

Seattle swings early

Is this today’s strategy against Cam Schlittler?
Leadoff man Brendan Donovan lashes the first delivery (96-mph fastball) for a double, but he’s stranded by Schlittler.
Three of the Mariners’ four batters swing at the first pitch in the first inning.
But Cal Raleigh fans on a 1-2 fastball, Julio Rodriguez swings through an 0-2 heater and Josh Naylor flies out sharply on a first-pitch fastball.
Yanks hand Cam a lead

And it starts with two out, nobody on.
Cody Bellinger walks, steals second (the Yanks have been aggressive vs. catcher Cal Raleigh) and DH Ben Rice doubles him home, 1-0.
