MILWAUKEE — Christian Yelich hit a go-ahead, two-run single in a six-run eighth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 8-2 on Wednesday.
Garrett Mitchell added a two-run double during the decisive rally, Blake Perkins drove in a run with a groundout and David Hamilton capped the inning with an RBI single as Milwaukee (5-1) broke open a 2-2 game.
Brice Turang tied it earlier with a two-run home run in the third after the Rays took the lead on Yandy Diaz’s two-run shot in the top half of the inning.
Milwaukee starter Jacob Misiorowski (1-0) struck out 7 and allowed 4 hits and 2 runs in 6 innings. The right-hander walked two before handing the game to the bullpen. Grant Anderson, Aaron Ashby and DL Hall combined for three scoreless innings, with Hall striking out three in the ninth.
Tampa Bay (2-4) starter Drew Rasmussen allowed 1 run and 2 hits while striking out 8 in 5 innings.
Griffin Jax (0-2) took the loss after allowing five runs in the eighth inning.
BRAVES 5, ATHLETICS 1 Drake Baldwin drove in four runs with a pair of two-out hits, Chris Sale pitched one-hit ball over six innings and Atlanta wrapped up their season-opening homestand with a victory over the struggling Athletics.
GUARDIANS 4, DODGERS 1 Gavin Williams struck out 10 in seven scoreless innings, outpitching World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Jose Ramirez hit his first home run of the season to lead Cleveland past the Los Angeles Dodgers. Gabriel Arias also went deep for the Guardians, who took two of three games in the series from the two-time defending champions. Williams (1-1) walked three and allowed only two hits.
CUBS 6, ANGELS 2 Matthew Boyd struck out 10 while pitching into the sixth inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Los Angeles Angels. Nico Hoerner had three hits for Chicago on a chilly and windy afternoon at Wrigley Field. Matt Shaw had two hits and two RBI, and Alex Bregman reached three times in the rubber game of the three-game series.
DIAMONDBACKS 1, TIGERS 0 Zac Gallen (1-1) outdueled two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, Corbin Carroll homered and Arizona beat Detroit to sweep the three-game series.
MARLINS 10, WHITE SOX 0 Sandy Alcantara threw the first complete game of the MLB season in a 93-pitch shutout to lead Miami over the Chicago White Sox. It was Alcantara’s second career shutout with fewer than 100 pitches. It was his 13th career complete game.
ROCKIES 2, BLUE JAYS 1 (10) Pinch hitter Tyler Freeman hit an RBI single in the 10th inning and Colorado beat Toronto. Troy Johnston had two hits, including a game-tying single in the eighth, as the Rockies won their first series of the season.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
CARDINALS 2, METS 1 (11) Masyn Winn singled home the winning run with two outs in the 11th inning to give St. Louis a victory over the slumping New York Mets. Nolan Gorman hit a tying single in the sixth and reliever Gordon Graceffo (1-0) pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the top of the 11th.
PADRES 7, GIANTS 1 Nick Pivetta struck out eight in five sharp innings and Ramon Laureano hit a two-run home run for San Diego, which beat San Francisco to avoid a three-game sweep. Pivetta (1-1) bounced back from a rough opening day start, when he allowed 6 runs and 7 hits in 3 innings of an 8-2 home loss to Detroit.
PHILLIES 6, NATIONALS 5 (10) Rookie Justin Crawford had an RBI single in the 10th inning after Philadelphia rallied from a four-run deficit for a victory over Washington. The Nationals led 5-1 in the seventh. J.T. Realmuto and Bryce Harper hit home runs to get the Phillies within 5-3.
PIRATES 8, REDS 3 Oneil Cruz had a three-run home run, his third in two games, Paul Skenes allowed one run in five innings and Pittsburgh defeated Cincinnati to take the three-game series. Bryan Reynolds had a two-run shot, and Nick Gonzales added a two-run double during the ninth inning.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
ASTROS 6, RED SOX 4 Carlos Correa put Houston on top with a three-run home run and Christian Vazquez added a shot to lead the Astros to a win over Boston to complete a three-game sweep.
ORIOLES 8, RANGERS 3 The first game-ending call by a so-called robot umpire gave Albert Suarez his first major league save in nine years, ending Baltimore’s win over Texas. A 1-2 fastball on the upper, outside corner to Evan Carter was called a ball by plate umpire Manny Gonzalez and Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo tapped his helmet, initiating the challenge. About 13 seconds later, the scoreboard graphic from the Automated Ball-Strike System showed the ball clipped the strike zone. Basallo jogged to the mound as Gonzalez made the announcement, and the catcher hugged Suarez, who allowed one run over three innings for his first save since Aug. 6, 2017, for San Francisco against Arizona.
ROYALS 13, TWINS 9 Jonathan India hit a grand slam and drove in five runs, powering Kansas City to a victory over Minnesota. Kyle Isbel went 4 for 4 with a home run and Noah Cameron pitched five solid innings to win his season debut. India’s fifth career slam — and first with the Royals — capped a seven-run sixth as Kansas City sent 11 batters to the plate while taking a 12-1 lead.
YANKEES 5, MARINERS 3 Cam Schlittler (2-0) pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning and Paul Goldschmidt hit a three-run home run as the New York Yankees beat Seattle. Ben Rice also homered and had an RBI double for the Yankees, who finished 5-1 on their West Coast trip to begin the season.
