The Boston Red Sox season is off to a slow start. After winning on opening day, the Red Sox have dropped five straight, including a three-game sweep at the hands of the Houston Astros.Â
The final game of the series took place on Wednesday. The Red Sox jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but ultimately fell, 6-4. Boston has an off day on Thursday before their home opener against the San Diego Padres on Friday. They head home with a 1-5 record, last place in the American League East.Â
Fortunately, the baseball season is long and grueling. The team still has six months and 156 games left to play. Red Sox manager Alex Cora is taking it one game and one series at a time.Â
“Don’t look at the whole picture,” Cora said. “That’s the way you come out of stuff like this, win series. We’ve got the Padres, we’ve got the Brewers. Win those two series at home, and then go on the road and do the same thing.”
The Red Sox have 25 games remaining in April. Cora offered a target for how many he wanted to win by the end of the month before looking ahead to May.
“It’s April 1st, it’s the first game of April. Win 17 games this month and you’re going to be okay,” Cora said.Â
The Red Sox will give the ball to Sonny Gray on Thursday against the Padres. He’s looking to get back on track after a rocky team debut. San Diego comes in with a struggling offense, having scored 19 runs over their first six games.
