Angels at Cubs picks and predictionsPrediction
Cubs 6, Angels 4
No interest; PASS.
Chicago has won 4 straight against Los Angeles, outscoring the Angels 24-6 along the way.
The Cubs went 50-31 (.617) at home last season. Including playoff games, the Cubs went 18-9 (.667) from Aug. 16 on.
Last season, Cabrera exhibited an uptick in velocity while posting a career-best walk rate. Over the last 3 seasons for Miami, the 27-year-old has allowed a combined 5 runs across 15 2/3 IP in his season-debut starts. In 3 career efforts at Wrigley Field, he has held opposing batters to an aggregate .634 OPS.
Johnson is more of a question mark. But notably, his tidy Single-A ERA last season was filed in a pitcher-friendly circuit in the Northwest League.
Preseason projections peg the Cubs as a contender in the NL Central and the Angels as a bottom-feeder in the AL West.
TAKE CHICAGO -1.5 (+115) in this one.
The Over is 13-6-1 across Chicago’s last 20 games at home.
Both bullpens have ERA’s of 3.00, but their early-season figures are loaded with several luck factors. Advanced metrics tell a different story. Plus, neither side figures to be in the best of shape when it comes to availability in the back end of the bullpen.
Add to that a forecast for an outward-blowing breeze at Wrigley, and the OVER 9.5 (-115) is the value side.
