CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – Nancy Sherwin will take center stage for the second time at Progressive Field on Friday for the Guardians’ opening day.
The 94-year-old will present the opening day game ball to the umpire, a recognition of her 50 years as a season ticket holder.
Sherwin’s connection to baseball began with her father.
“We always knew that baseball was the greatest thing,” Sherwin said.
When Sherwin moved to Cleveland for graduate school, she attended her first game at the stadium.
“It was a bright beautiful day, so I just went and I thought well I can go to the stadium,” she said.
Sherwin scores every game she attends and is now on her sixth Herb Score scorebook.
“I have kept score for all the games that I attend,” she said.
Her scorebook has become a resource for fans sitting near her.
“There are some men who drink more beer than I do and they have to get up and go the restroom, and then when they come back they ask me, ‘what in the world how did that man get on third base?’ and I can always look down at my scorebook and figure it out,” she said.
Sherwin threw out the first pitch for her 90th birthday and made sure to practice for the big moment.
“I was determined to throw it overhand and throw it straight,” she said.
For Friday’s ceremony, she will walk to the mound with a little help, and a lot of heart.
“I said do they realize I have a walker? If someone is holding on to me on either side, I can walk up there,” she said.
All four of her children will be in Cleveland to watch their mom and celebrate the city she calls home.
“I was so glad when I moved to Cleveland, that there was a major league baseball team in this city,” Sherwin said.
