The Burton Panthers rode an early one-run lead to victory on Thursday to secure a series sweep over Mumford.
Burton got one run in the first inning and held on to a 1-0 lead against the Mustangs for its fifth consecutive victory.
The Panthers (16-3, 5-1 district) swept Mumford for the first time since 2019 after they had been on the receiving end of sweeps against the Mustangs in the last two seasons. Burton also moved one game past Mumford in the District 26-2A standings. Mumford (10-9, 4-2 district) has a 6-2 combined district mark including two wins over Round Top-Carmine.
Junior shortstop Tyler Witt led the game off with a walk. He advanced to second base on an error, moved to third base on a sacrifice by second baseman Logan Tosta and scored on an RBI single from catcher Braydon Martin.
The one run was all of the run support Burton’s pitching staff needed. Junior Eli Jaeger pitched 6 2/3 innings of shutout work with 11 strikeouts with just five hits allowed. Jaeger gave way to freshman Easton Witt after reaching 110 pitches. The freshman induced a ground ball to second base against his only batter, Mumford catcher Brooks Cornett, to seal the win.
In addition to earning the win on the mound, Jaeger went 2 for 3 at the plate for his second two-hit game against the Mustangs this week. He has seven multi-hit performances this season.
Martin led the Panthers at the plate with his first three-hit game of the season. He went 3 for 5 at the plate with three singles.
Jaeger and Martin’s performances helped Burton equal Mumford’s five hits.
Right fielder Coy Gurka drew two of Burton’s three walks.
Burton will continue district play at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday when it starts a two-game series against Somerville on the road.
