The Pittsburgh Pirates needed to make room on the active roster for Konnor Griffin, who is being promoted for what will be his big-league debut during Friday’s home opener at PNC Park.

To make room on the active roster, the Pirates optioned Billy Cook to Triple-A Indianapolis. Cook appeared in three games as a defensive replacement/late-game sub this season, played two innings in right field and scored one run.

Cook has played in 22 games over the last three seasons with the Pirates and has hit .236 with a .673 OPS, two doubles, three home runs and eight RBI. He’s also been responsible for seven defensive runs saved.

Last year with Indianapolis, Cook hit .248 with a .706 OPS, 17 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, 46 RBI and 13 steals in 94 games. In parts of five minor leagues seasons, Cook owns a .250/.330/.441 batting line with 86 doubles, 14 triples, 70 home runs, 295 RBI and 103 stolen bases in 472 games.

The Pirates still need to make room for Griffin on the 40-man roster.
