Seattle Mariners top prospect Colt Emerson is best known for his bat, but he can flash some leather too.
Dipoto: Emerson checked all the boxes for Mariners extension
Fresh off his record-setting contract extension with the Mariners, Emerson delivered a spectacular web gem on Thursday night at Triple-A Tacoma. Playing shortstop for the Rainiers, Emerson raced to his right to backhand a grounder. Then, all in one fluid motion, he threw across his body on the run and fired a strike to first base for an inning-ending out.

Emerson’s highlight-reel play came just two days after he signed a reported eight-year, $95 million contract extension with Seattle that runs through 2033 and includes a ninth-year club option for 2034. It’s currently the largest contract ever for a player who’s yet to reach the major leagues, surpassing the eight-year, $82 million deal that Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio signed in December 2024, according to Spotrac.
Emerson, a 20-year-old shortstop prospect, is viewed as a cornerstone of the Mariners’ future. A 2023 first-round draft pick out of John Glenn High School in New Concord, Ohio, he’s ranked by both MLB Pipeline and Baseball America as the No. 7 overall prospect in the sport.
The left-handed-hitting Emerson rocketed up multiple levels of the minor leagues last season, slashing .285/.383/.458 with 16 home runs, six triples, 28 doubles and an .842 OPS in 130 games between High-A Everett, Double-A Arkansas and Triple-A Tacoma.
This spring, Emerson slashed .268/.340/.488 with two homers, one triple and one double in 41 Cactus League at-bats. He’s beginning the season in Tacoma, but many expect him to make his MLB debut at some point in 2026. Through five games with the Rainiers this season, he’s batting .286 with a homer and a double.
