The Dumas Demonette softball team remains unbeaten in district play with a 5-2 victory over Randall Friday, Apr. 3. Star Cortes and the Demonette defense held Randall scoreless for six innings.
Scoring was scarce for both teams for most of the game. Randall took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Demonettes were held of the board until the top of the sixth with a Mia Fry single that drove in Vida Fierro to tail the Lady Raiders 2-1.
As the Demonettes entered the top of the seventh they were three outs way from dropping their first district game of the season, but Dumas showed that they can win the tough games as well. The inning started off with Natalee Keenan taking a walk, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Lisbeth Quirorz to put Keenan in scoring position. Aaliyah Chairez followed with a double to have two runners in scoring position. Vida Fierro singled which drove in Keenan for the tying run. Madi Zubia also singled as the next batter driving home Fierro to give Dumas it’s first lead of the afternoon. Star Cortes added two insurance runs with a double to give the Demonettes a 5-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Dumas’ defense put the game away with two pop outs and a ground out for the victory. Cortes was in the circle for Dumas and ended the day allowing only three hits and three strikeouts.
The Demonettes sit at 25-2-1 overall and 10-0 in district play.
