CLEVELAND, Ohio — During the height of Emmanuel Clase’s problems this season, manager Stephen Vogt lamented the fate of closers.
Vogt’s contention was that no one talks about a closer when he gets the final three outs in the ninth inning of a 2-1 win. It’s expected. Press a button and get a save.
Should that closer turn that 2-1 win into a 3-2 loss, the protest is long and loud.
Guardians fans may not have noticed, but Clase has slipped into MLB’s cone of silence. He has reached the ‘ho-hum’ portion of his season, which is a good place to be for a closer.
It means no one is asking about him because he’s just doing his job.
Since April 20, when Clase allowed three runs in the ninth inning to blow a save against the Pirates, he has converted seven straight saves in 13 appearances.
In those 13 games, Clase has a 1.42 ERA (two earned runs in 12 2/3 innings). He’s struck out 15, walked two and allowed eight hits. Clase’s overall ERA has dropped from 7.84 on April 20 to 4.36.
After the game against the Pirates, a game the Guardians won in 10 innings, Clase told the coaching staff that he had a sore right shoulder. He didn’t go on the injured list, but he was shut down for a while.
The rest helped.
Clase may never find the groove he was in last year when he posted a 0.61 ERA while converting 47 saves in 50 chances. Still, the fact that no one is talking about him is a good sign.
Breakfast and trivia
On Wednesday the Guards finished a 13-day stretch where they went 5-7 in 12 games. Thursday was a day off, so what they need this morning is a high-energy, stick-to-the-ribs breakfast that will energize them for tonight’s game against the Angels. How about a vegetable omelet with toast or a high-fiber cereal with berries and nuts?
Now see if you can answer this Guardians’ question. If Jose Ramirez extends his career-high hitting streak to 22 games tonight, what former teammate will he match? Answer below.
Just one
Hey, Hoynsie: I hope the experiment of Bo Naylor hitting second is over. Put Angel Martinez in the No.2 spot and leave him there. — Virgil Houser, Gustavus, Ohio.
Hey, Virgil: Manager Stephen Vogt has been looking for a No.2 hitter all season. I get why he tried Naylor there based on the way he was swinging the bat against Detroit, but I would think the switch-hitting Martinez deserves a longer look.
Of course, things could change if Steven Kwan’s sore right wrist keeps him out of the leadoff spot for a while.

Jose Ramirez would match Michael Brantley’s 22-game hitting streak in 2012 should he get a hit tonight against the Angels.
