The Minnesota Twins host the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday afternoon for their home opener.

The Tampa Bay Rays look to avoid losing three in a row when they start a new series on Friday afternoon against the Minnesota Twins. Both teams are 2-4, and neither team has played a home game before this series starts. This is Minnesota’s home opener of the season. Tampa Bay will host the Chicago Cubs starting on Monday for its home opener. Both teams are coming off series losses, with the Rays losing to the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers. The Twins lost a series against the Baltimore Orioles and the Kansas City Royals. Minnesota did avoid a four-game losing streak in its last game, beating the Royals in the series finale on Thursday. These teams are pretty evenly matched on paper coming into this series, and oddsmakers agree, giving the Twins just a -115 line to win this opener at home on Friday. These two will play for the final time this season in a three-game set in Tampa Bay at the end of the month.

Minnesota beat Kansas City on Thursday, 5-1, to avoid the series sweep against its division rival on the road. The win dropped the Royals to .500 on the year, with most of the Twins’ offense coming in the final two innings. Minnesota’s offense was highlighted by three solo shots in the ninth inning by Matt Wallner, Kody Clemens, and Josh Bell. Taj Bradley had a good start, going six scoreless innings, giving up five hits to earn his first victory of the season. The Royals only scored in the eighth on a sac fly. Bailey Ober will get the home opening start after going four innings against the Baltimore Orioles last Sunday, giving up four hits and three runs in an 8-6 loss.

Tampa Bay dropped its rubber match against the Brewers on Wednesday, 8-2, to drop the series. Christian Yelich hit a two-run single to break open a six-run eighth inning for Milwaukee, in what was otherwise a close game. Tampa starter Drew Rasmussen went five innings while only giving up two hits and one earned run, while striking out eight. The Rays will hope for a similar performance from today’s starter, Joe Boyle. The righty went six innings against the St. Louis Cardinals in his first start of the season, giving up two runs on three hits in a game Tampa Bay would ultimately lose 6-5 in 10 innings last Saturday.
