The Boston Red Sox try to end a five-game losing streak when they host the San Diego Padres to start a new series on Friday afternoon. This is the first and only series between these two interleague foes this season. The Red Sox aren’t the only team struggling coming into this series at Fenway. The Padres are also at the bottom of their division, losing both of their first two series to the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants. In both instances, the Padres won the series finale to avoid getting swept by both teams. Boston is worse off, though, with a 1-5 record and not winning since Opening Day against the Cincinnati Reds. Both teams have high aspirations for the playoffs this season and look to move past the Wild Card round. The Red Sox and Padres fell to the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs, respectively, 2-1. Despite their most recent struggles, the Red Sox are still a -120 favorite in the opener, being at home to start this weekend series.

The Red Sox were a little closer in their finale against the Houston Astros in their last series, but the result was the same, dropping their fifth in a row, 6-4 on Wednesday. Carlos Correa looks like he likes being back in a Houston uniform, depositing a three-run homer in the fifth inning to put the Astros over the top. Boston scored two in the first two innings and two more in the final two innings off solo homers from Wilyer Abreu and Jarren Duran. But the Correra homer put Houston up for good, with their ace Garrett Crochet taking the loss, giving up four earned runs in five innings while striking out seven. Sonny Gray will get the start in the opener on Friday. The veteran righty struggled in his debut for the Red Sox, giving up four runs in four innings in a game that Boston would eventually lose 6-5 in 11 innings against the Cincinnati Reds last Saturday.

San Diego salvaged a win in their series finale against the Giants at home, winning 7-1 on Wednesday. Nick Pivetta had a strong outing, going five innings while only giving up a hit and striking out eight to earn his first win of the season. Ramon Laureano hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth for all the run support the Padres would need. The Padres will start Michael King against Boston. The righty went five innings without giving up a run and only one hit, but the Padres ultimately lost to the Detroit Tigers last Friday, 5-2.
