DONNELLSON — Marking a game on a team’s calendar seems to work well for the Burlington Notre Dame Nikes baseball team.
It also helps to be the recipient of 12 bases on balls, two errors and a three-run home run from Eli Oleson as well as 11 other hits.
The result was Notre Dame’s 15-1 five-inning victory at Super Conference South Division rival Central Lee Thursday night.
“We marked this game on our schedule, knowing it will be a tough game,” Notre Dame coach Chris Chiprez said. “Our guys came down here and performed and performed well. i am extremely happy with the outcome.”
Central Lee coach Shane Weirather did not have the same disposition.
“Throwing strikes and hitting strikes, we didn’t do a very good job of either,” Weirather said. “All the credit to Burlington Notre Dame. They were great, fundamentally sound just like they always are.”
Landry Habrichter started the game with a double off Hawks pitcher Bo Herdrich, advanced on a bunt and scored on an error.
The Hawks tied the game in the second inning without a hit when Hunter Edlin walked, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and went home on another passed ball.
It wasn’t tied for long.
The top of the third saw three singles and three walks, all with two outs, result in a 5-1 Notre Dame advantage. It also brought Chase Johnson in at pitcher for Central Lee.
The game was put away in the top of the fourth inning. Two singles a walk and a wild pitch allowed Habrichter to score.
Haberichter was 3-for-3 with three runs, two RBI and two stolen bases. Diewold had three of the Nikes’ 10 stolen bases.
With Maddox Diewold and Garrison Reid on base and no outs, Oleson had a full count.
“I saw a fastball right down the middle, turned on it and swung,” Oleson said. “It felt good.”
The ball left the diamond and traveled over the left field fence amid encouragement calls of “Get out” from fans and teammates.
“I swung as hard as I can to be honest,” Oleson said. “I got all of it. It was a momentum changer so it was good.”
That swing made it 9-1 but it was 12-1 before the inning ended and Ward Fraise was now pitching for Central Lee.
A single then two outs, then two singles and and two walks in the fifth inning brought about a 15-1 score.
The Hawks couldn’t mount a threat with just two hits in the game.
Blake Davis had a single in the first inning and Kayden Calfee had a single in the third inning.
Notre Dame starter Payne Prottsman threw all but the final out, which Jeremiah Crow got om a ground out, striking out eight but walking six. The run was unearned.
Hawks pitchers combined for 12 walks, five strikeouts (three by Johnson), 12 hits and all 15 runs were earned.
“Central Lee is a good team especially at their place so it’s good to get this win,” Chiprez said. “They have a good coaching staff. They have good players.”
Notre Dame is 2-0 overall and in the South. The Nikes played Mediapolis Friday at home then play at West Burlington Tuesday. The rematch with the Hawks is June 13.
“I think they didn’t play their best,” Oleson said. “Next time we play them it will be at home but it will be a closer, more competitive game.”
Central Lee is 1-1 after scoring a 12-9 win at Fairfield Wednesday night.
After competing in the Class 2A state golf tournament during the day (and leading the Hawks contingent with the low round of the day) Herdrich started the game and the hawks’ baseball season off with a no-out three-run home run in the first inning. He ended up going 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
Fraise, Davis and Mason Sanders each hit a double and a single against the Trojans. Brett Cook also had a double.
The Hawks played at Danville Friday and go to Anamosa Monday, then play Burlington at Community Field Tuesday.
