PHOENIX — Ketel Marte laced a walk-off double in the bottom of the 10th inning to propel the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-5 victory Sunday against the Atlanta Braves.
Corbin Carroll went 3-for-4 with an RBI triple, while Ildemaro Vargas drove in two runs on a triple for the Diamondbacks, who earned consecutive one-run wins to split the four-game series.
Taylor Rashi (1-0) earned his first career win, throwing a perfect top of the 10th in his season debut. In the bottom of the frame, Marte doubled on the first pitch from Joel Payamps (0-1) to score the automatic runner and end the game.
Brandon Pfaadt threw 4â…” innings of three-run ball, allowing six hits while striking out two and walking two.
Drake Baldwin went 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBI for the Braves. Martin Perez allowed four runs on five hits in his first start of the season, striking out one and walking one.
Angels 8, Mariners 7
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Nolan Schanuel’s sacrifice fly scored the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Seattle Mariners.
Shaun Anderson (1-0) struck out Cal Raleigh with the bases loaded in the top of the inning.
With Adam Frazier the automatic runner at second base, Gabe Speier (0-2) intentionally walked Zach Neto leading off the bottom of the inning. Both runners advanced on Oswald Peraza’s sacrifice bunt and Schanuel lifted a fly ball to left field, with Frazier beating the throw home.
Both teams scored in the 10th. Randy Arozarena’s single to right gave the Mariners a 7-6 lead in the top of the inning. In the bottom half, automatic runner Jo Adell advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bryce Teodosio and scored on Logan O’Hoppe’s sacrifice fly to center.
The Mariners tied the game with a two-out rally in the ninth. Raleigh doubled to left and chugged home on Julio Rodriguez’s broken-bat single to left on a 2-2 slider from Sam Bachman.
Angels right-hander George Klassen, called up from Triple-A Salt Lake City to make his major league debut with scheduled starter Ryan Johnson scratched because of an illness, lasted just 2â…” innings. Klassen gave up two runs on three hits, with five walks and four strikeouts.
Mariners starter Luis Castillo didn’t go much longer, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits in 3⅔ innings. The righty walked one and fanned four.
Dodgers 8, Nationals 6
WASHINGTON — Shohei Ohtani, Dalton Rushing and Teoscar Hernandez homered, and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to beat the Nationals, completing the three-game sweep.
Ohtani’s sacrifice fly drove in the go-ahead run to cap a four-run eighth inning for the Dodgers. Former National Alex Call had two hits and scored twice.
James Wood had a three-run homer and Luis Garcia, Jr. hit a two-run shot for Washington, which has dropped five straight.
With Los Angeles trailing 6-3 in the eighth inning, Freddie Freeman led off with a single against Cionel Perez (0-1) and Andy Pages doubled him to third. After Call walked, Santiago Espinal lined a single to center, scoring two runs to make it 6-5.
Will Smith walked and Clayton Beeter came on to face pinch-hitter Kyle Tucker, who grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Call to tie it at 6. Ohtani then flied to left, scoring Espinal with the go-ahead run.
Hernandez provided some insurance with a solo homer in the ninth.
Jack Dreyer (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the win and Edwin Diaz worked the ninth for his third save.
A’s 12, Astros 10
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Brent Rooker clubbed a pair of home runs, including a three-run walk-off blast in the 10th inning that lifted the host Athletics to a wild win against the Houston Astros in the rubber match of a three-game series.
Rooker, who finished with six RBI, drove in Shea Langeliers and Tyler Soderstrom with his shot off Astros closer Bryan Abreu (0-1). Rooker smashed a 2-0 fastball to left field that countered Houston’s run in the top of the 10th.
The Athletics erased a three-run deficit with a five-run fifth, and when the Astros pulled even at 5 on a two-run homer from Christian Walker in the top of the seventh, Rooker ignited a four-run outburst in the bottom of that frame by snapping an 0-for-13 skid with his first home run.
Trailing 9-5, the Astros fashioned an immediate response against reliever Scott Barlow. Jake Meyers opened the top of the eighth with his first home run and, three batters later, Jose Altuve chased Barlow with an RBI double that plated Joey Loperfido. Mark Leiter Jr. retired two batters with the bases loaded, but Cam Smith delivered a game-tying two-run single to center.
Yordan Alvarez clubbed his fourth home run in the top of the fifth off Athletics starter Jacob Lopez, a two-run shot, and Smith extended the Houston lead to 3-0 with his RBI single against Justin Sterner.
Astros starter Lance McCullers Jr. was unable to hold the lead as the bottom of the Athletics order ignited the rally that yielded a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Cortes chased McCullers with a run-scoring double to right. Soderstrom delivered the biggest blow with a bases-clearing triple off Astros reliever Steven Okert that handcuffed Meyers and scored McNeil, Cortes and Nick Kurtz.
Cubs 1, Guardians 0
CLEVELAND — Four Chicago Cubs pitchers limited the host Cleveland Guardians to one hit as the visiting Cubs squeaked out a victory in the first game of a doubleheader.
Miguel Amaya’s single off Connor Brogdon (2-1) with one out in the eighth scored Dylan Carlson from second as the Cubs managed to win with just two hits. Carlson came on as a pinch-runner after Michael Conforto worked a leadoff walk.
Caleb Thielbar (1-0) allowed one walk in 1â…“ innings of relief to get the win. Daniel Palencia retired the side in order in the ninth to claim his first save of the season.
Starter Edward Cabrera allowed the only hit, a CJ Kayfus double, to start the Guardians’ sixth. Steven Kwan bunted Kayfus to third, but Kayfus was thrown out at home on Chase DeLauter’s grounder to second baseman Nico Hoerner.
Jose Ramirez and Kyle Manzardo walked to load the bases before Thielbar relieved Cabrera. Thielbar got Bo Naylor to pop up to end the threat.
Cabrera issued five walks and struck out four in 5â…” innings. He was helped by a couple strong defensive plays. Michael Busch prevented an extra-base hit by Manzardo with a diving stop behind first base to lead off the second. Brayan Rocchio started the Cleveland third with a walk, but Amaya threw him out trying to steal.
Guardians 6, Cubs 5
CLEVELAND — Gabriel Arias’ RBI single highlighted a three-run eighth inning for the Cleveland Guardians, who rallied to beat the Chicago Cubs 6-5 in the nightcap of a doubleheader.
The Guardians overcame deficits of 3-0 and 4-3 to wrangle a split with the Cubs. CJ Kayfus went 2-for-2 with a pinch-hit RBI single in the sixth to make it 3-1. With one out in the eighth, he rallied from an 0-2 hole to smack his first home run of the season to right field off Jacob Webb (0-1) and tie the contest at 4.
Chase DeLauter followed with a single, and Rhys Hoskins walked to bring up Arias, who lined a shot into left field to score DeLauter.
Cleveland reliever Cade Smith gave up a run on two walks and a hit in the ninth. Ian Happ’s single cut the lead to one, but Smith got Carson Kelly looking to earn his third save of the season and give the Guardians their second win in the three-game series.
Chicago used the long ball to get up early. Matt Shaw led off the Cubs third with his first of the season.
That was the only run Cleveland starter Parker Messick gave up in five innings. He allowed two hits and three walks while striking out six.
Dansby Swanson hit his first homer of the season, a two-run shot off Matt Festa, in the sixth inning. After the Guardians tied it with a three-run sixth, Happ’s lead-off homer in the eighth off Shawn Armstrong (1-0) put the Cubs back ahead.
Padres 8, Red Sox 6
BOSTON — Jackson Merrill’s leadoff home run in the eighth inning broke a late tie and lifted the visiting San Diego Padres to a win against the Boston Red Sox.
Merrill went 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored to lead San Diego, which banged out 12 hits and erased an early 4-0 deficit to claim the series. Manny Machado (2-for-4, three-run homer) and Xander Bogaerts (3-for-3, double) also had multiple hits.
Jeremiah Estrada (1-1) was victorious following a scoreless inning of relief, and Mason Miller struck out the side to post his second save in as many days.
Wilyer Abreu (double, triple, RBI, two runs scored) and Masataka Yoshida (3-for-4, two doubles, three RBI) combined for six of Boston’s nine hits.
Tyler Uberstine (0-1) lost his MLB debut for the Red Sox, allowing one run on three hits across 2â…” innings.
Boston lefty Ranger Suarez faced the minimum through 3⅓ innings, including inducing an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play off Merrill’s bat in the first.
Mets 5, Giants 2
SAN FRANCISCO — Pinch hitter Luis Torrens stroked a go-ahead two-RBI double in a four-run eighth inning against the San Francisco bullpen, helping the visiting New York Mets rally for a 5-2 victory in a game that saw the first ejection of new Giants manager Tony Vitello.
After Logan Webb limited the Mets to one run through seven innings, New York strung together five consecutive one-out hits against a pair of San Francisco relievers to flip the score and deliver a third straight win after a series-opening defeat Thursday.
Jorge Polanco got the uprising going with a one-out double off Keaton Winn (0-1), after which Luis Robert Jr. singled and stole second base.
Stepping in for Jared Young, who had a 3-for-3 day going, Torrens then greeted Erik Miller with an opposite-field double to right to give New York the lead.
It became a two-run game when Matt Chapman threw Mark Vientos’ infield hit past first baseman Rafael Devers, scoring Torrens and sending Vientos to second, after which Marcus Semien lashed an RBI double to left, making it 5-2.
Huascar Brazoban (1-0) was credited with the win after following starter Kodai Senga with 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief. Luke Weaver threw a 1-2-3 eighth before Devin Williams got the final three outs for his second save.
Rays 4, Twins 1
MINNEAPOLIS — Richie Palacios clubbed a go-ahead two-run homer in the 10th inning as the Tampa Bay Rays claimed their first series this season with a victory against the Minnesota Twins.
On the second pitch from Justin Topa (0-1), Palacios, who went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base, belted his first home run deep to right to score Ben Williamson, who started the 10th on second base.
Junior Caminero, who hit a solo homer, later drove in a run with a walk. Kevin Kelly earned his second save in relief of Bryan Baker (1-0), who pitched a perfect ninth with two whiffs.
In his second straight quality start, the Rays’ Nick Martinez yielded just a solo shot — the only hit against the right-hander — in six innings. He fanned four with a walk.
Matt Wallner went deep for the Twins, who managed just three hits in their second straight setback.
Simeon Woods Richardson allowed five hits and one run on a solo homer in 6â…” innings with four strikeouts and two walks.
Wallner opened the game’s scoring in the second inning by jumping on a 1-0 cutter from Martinez and lobbing a 409-foot shot down the right field line for a 1-0 lead.
White Sox 3, Blue Jays 0
CHICAGO — Davis Martin pitched six effective innings and the Chicago White Sox defeated the visiting Toronto Blue Jays to sweep their three-game series.
Martin (2-0) allowed four hits and two walks with six strikeouts. After Bryan Hudson and Jordan Leasure handled the next two innings, Chris Murphy pitched around a leadoff walk in the ninth to earn the save.
Austin Hays, Miguel Vargas and Lenyn Sosa each had RBI. Luisangel Acuna had two hits.
Ernie Clement had two hits for the Blue Jays, who were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position in losing their fourth straight.
The White Sox scored once in the first against Eric Lauer (1-1). Chase Meidroth led off by lashing a double to left and scored when Vargas’ two-out liner to center bounced past Daulton Varsho for what was scored a triple.
The Blue Jays threatened in the third. Andres Gimenez walked and Brandon Valenzuela, starting at catcher with Alejandro Kirk out due to a fractured thumb, singled to right in his first major league at-bat. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. walked with two out to load the bases. Addison Barger grounded out to shortstop on a superb play by Tanner Murray, who was making his major-league debut.
Rockies 4, Phillies 1
DENVER — Mickey Moniak hit two home runs and TJ Rumfield also went deep as the Colorado Rockies beat the Philadelphia Phillies.
Hunter Goodman had two hits and Tomoyuki Sugano pitched six strong innings to earn his first win for Colorado. Victor Vodnik got the last three outs to earn his first save as the Rockies salvaged the finale of the three-game series.
Adolis Garcia homered and singled for the Phillies.
Colorado did not homer in its first two home games and had just five in its first eight games overall. Moniak changed that in the first inning with his two-out solo clout to the second deck in right.
It marked the first time the Rockies led in the series.
Goodman followed with a single to center and Rumfield lined the first pitch he saw from Taijuan Walker into the stands in right to give the Rockies a 3-0 lead.
Walker (0-2) struggled in his second start of the season, allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings.
Sugano retired the Phillies in order in the sixth to finish his quality outing. Sugano (1-0) allowed just one run on four hits and struck out five.
Reds 2, Rangers 1
ARLINGTON, Texas — Elly De La Cruz singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the visiting Cincinnati Reds beat the Texas Rangers to complete the three-game sweep.
De La Cruz had two hits and scored a run, and Will Benson had two hits for Cincinnati.
Joc Pederson homered for Texas, which scored four runs in the series and has dropped four straight.
Reliever Sam Moll (1-0) got the win, and Brock Burke struck out the side in the ninth for his first career save. Robert Garcia (0-1) took the loss.
Matt McClain walked leading off the eighth against Garcia, stole second and scored when De La Cruz grounded a single to right. De La Cruz stole second, Eugenio Suarez walked and Spencer Steer singled off Chris Martin to load the bases, but Tyler Stephenson lined into a double play.
The Rangers got runners on first and third with two outs in the eighth, but Connor Phillips struck out Evan Carter.
Marlins 7, Yankees 6
NEW YORK — Pinch hitter Graham Pauley lined a go-ahead two-run double with the bases loaded against Jake Bird to spark a four-run eighth inning and the Miami Marlins hung on for a win against the host New York Yankees after a lengthy rain delay.
The Marlins chipped away at an early 4-1 deficit following a pregame delay of three hours and 35 minutes and took their first lead in the eighth.
Bird (1-1) replaced Fernando Cruz after Jakob Marsee drew a one-out walk. After Bird walked Otto Lopez and hit pinch hitter Griffin Conine on the left foot, Pauley batted for Connor Norby.
Pauley gave the Marlins a 5-4 lead when he lined a sweeper down the right-field line.
Xavier Edwards, who drove in three runs, followed with a two-run single off Ryan Yarbrough for a three-run lead.
New York’s Ben Rice hit a three-run homer in the first off opener Pete Fairbanks.
After throwing 13⅓ scoreless innings in his first two starts, New York’s Max Fried allowed three runs on five hits in 6⅔ innings. Fried struck out four and walked three.
John King (1-0) notched the last out of the seventh and Calvin Faucher stranded a runner in the eighth. Anthony Bender allowed a two-run double to Jazz Chisholm Jr. before fanning pinch hitter J.C. Escarra to secure his first save.
Pirates 8, Orioles 2
PITTSBURGH — Braxton Ashcraft struck out a career-high eight and Ryan O’Hearn drove in four runs to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Baltimore Orioles.
O’Hearn and Oneil Cruz each hit two-run home runs to help the Pirates complete a three-game sweep of the Orioles, and win their fifth in a row. Pittsburgh did not sweep a series last season until June.
Ashcraft (1-1) gave up one run on an RBI double by Pete Alonso in the fourth inning, which put the Orioles on the board. But Ashcraft limited the damage, eventually tossing six innings without a walk. He allowed only four hits.
Taylor Ward led the Orioles at the plate with three hits.
Pirates pitchers struck out 14 overall without a walk.
Meanwhile, O’Hearn torched his former club at the plate, starting with a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the first off Baltimore starter Chris Bassitt (0-2). Pittsburgh followed with four more runs in the second.
Cruz finished with two hits and three RBI and started the scoring in that frame with an RBI single when he lined a 112-mph hit on one hop off Bassitt’s leg. Bassitt shook it off and remained in the game. He later allowed a two-run double to O’Hearn that scored Cruz and Brandon Lowe.
