Even though Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Konnor Griffin has played in three big league games, the hype surrounding him is real. The 19-year-old collected a double and an RBI in his debut, but has gone 0-6 with a strikeout since April 3.

Despite the lackluster performance since making his debut, Griffin will have the freedom to get as many at-bats with the Pirates, as he is their best option at shortstop at the moment. Third baseman/shortstop Jared Triolo recently hit the injured list with a right knee patellar tendon injury and hadn’t performed well as the Pirates’ Opening Day shortstop. Triolo batted .217 with a .569 OPS and -53 defensive runs saved at shortstop in five games.

Konnor Griffin thanks the city of Pittsburgh and the Pirates fans for an unforgettable MLB debut

In a post sent through his Instagram, Griffin thanked the entire city of Pittsburgh for an “unforgettable day,” and for all who supported him throughout his professional career.

“An unforgettable day. All glory to God! Thank you to all the people that have supported me throughout this journey! I am proud to be a Pittsburgh Pirate!”

Before receiving the call to come to the big leagues, Griffin had been raking while with Triple-A Indianapolis. Through five games, Griffin batted .438 with a 1.196 OPS with an RBI and five walks.

Griffin’s hot start came on the heels of a tough spring training, where he struck out 13 times in 41 at-bats. However, the Jackson, Mississippi native did hit four home runs and had nine RBI.
