Chris Sale is quite intimidating on the mound.

The Atlanta Braves‘ left-hander has those long levers and a fierce scowl. The fact that he’s one of the best pitchers in MLB only adds to the imposing nature of his presence.

On Monday night, though, Sale turned that energy inward.

He wasn’t having his best game, and after walking the bases loaded against the Los Angeles Angels, he expressed frustration toward himself.

He did it in a way that felt as if he had temporarily lost control — he slammed the baseball into his own head.

Here he is walking back to the mound and essentially punching himself with the ball:

The outing got a bit worse from here, too. Sale and the Braves went on to lose 6-2 as he was outdueled by Angels ace Jose Soriano.

The baseball to the head probably didn’t have any major effect, but it did sort of sum up the night for Sale.

He’ll have better performances ahead. In this one, things got so frustrating that he took out the pain on himself.
