Charlie Cummings previews Tuesday’s MLB matchup between the Chicago White Sox and the Baltimore Orioles and provides his best pick.
It’s always a treat when two aces square off at the beginning of the season. The Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox are putting their best foot forward on Tuesday, asking their top arms to deliver a win. Who comes out on top?
First pitch is set for 3:10 p.m. ET. The Orioles are -136 moneyline favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook. A White Sox win is priced at +113. The game total is set at O/U seven runs.
Let’s get into a pick and prediction for this Orioles-White Sox game.
Orioles vs. White Sox Preview
First things first, let’s get to know these starting pitchers.
Trevor Rogers is a breakout ace candidate this season at the top of Baltimore’s rotation. In limited action last season, Rogers was unbelievable; he posted a 1.81 ERA over 109.2 innings between the Marlins and Orioles. He doesn’t blow you away with velocity, but mixes his pitches very well and has great breaking stuff. Boy oh boy, that changeup can move. It’s a strong formula for the lefty.
Opposite him is Shane Smith, the No. 1 starter for the White Sox. It has not been a fun start to the season for Smith; after a brutal spring training, he is taking his lumps in the regular season. He got only five outs on Opening Day against the Brewers, surrendering four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks. It only got worse in his next start against the Marlins; over three innings, he was drilled for eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits and two walks. He’s not missing bats or keeping the ball on the ground, which is a rough formula in this day and age.
Both of these lineups are seeking better results. Baltimore made big upgrades by adding Pete Alonso and Taylor Ward, but the team is off to a slow start; Ward and Adley Rutschman are the only regulars in the lineup performing so far. It’s much of the same for the White Sox; everyone other than Miguel Vargas and Munetaka Murakami is having their struggles. On the bright side in the South Side, Murakami looks every bit the middle-of-the-order bat they paid for in the offseason.
Now that we know these teams a bit better, who is going to take this one home?
Orioles vs. White Sox Pick, Best Bet
Smith won’t be late-career Patrick Corbin forever. But he is awfully vulnerable at the moment. Facing a starter on a scorching hot streak, the deck is stacked against Chicago in this one. I’m seeing a turnaround game for Baltimore’s lineup on the horizon, and another tough day at the office for Smith.
Best Bet: Baltimore Orioles Run Line -1.5 (+123)
