TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCJB) – 20, 10, 5. Florida State climbed the rankings of the Top 25, but along the way they collapsed against the (23-9) Gators and thanks to a redshirt freshman from Tampa, Florida swept the Noles in a 4-3 midweek victory leading to their 8th sweep against FSU under the Kevin O’Sullivan era.
Hayden Yost led it off with his first homer of the season, but FSU countered to tie it. Cole Stanford continues t dominate midweek play with his fifth jack of the year to take a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Ethan Surowiec and Karson Bowen rack up RBI’s off back-to-back singles to take a 4-1 lead.
But FSU cut it to one off Hunter Cairns two-run shot to make it 4-3.
Sully brought in Joshua Whirtenour who closed the door multiple times on FSU. He threw four K’s to earn his sixth save including a 99 mph fastball that ended the scoring opportunity for FSU.
Head coach Kevin O’Sullivan said, “Couldn’t be more proud of the way Josh threw after coming off, obviously a really disappointing ending to Saturday night. But that strikeout in the eighth and the way this place was really loud, having a hard time hearing the pitch it was that loud, but gets the 3-2 strikeout and then, was out there in the ninth and does great. So, a lot of positive things, and we needed to scrap out a win, especially on the road… Any time you can sweep an in-state rival, you got to feel good about it.”
The next series is in Athens against the Georgia Bulldogs. There is no word on whether Aidan King and Liam Peterson could switch nights.
First pitch is at 6 pm on Friday night.
