The Pittsburgh Pirates aren’t letting Konnor Griffin get away. The team announced Wednesday that they’ve signed the No. 1 overall prospect in baseball to a nine-year, $140 million contract extension, with escalators that could push the total value as high as $150 million, per Pirates Insider Jason Mackey.

Pittsburgh Pirates Sign Konnor Griffin to Nine-Year Contract Extension

Griffin, who turns 20 later this month, was called up to the Major League roster last week after tearing through the minor leagues in 2025 — slashing .333/.415/.527 with 21 home runs, 65 stolen bases, and 94 RBIs across multiple levels. He put on a power show in spring training, was briefly sent back to Triple-A Indianapolis to open the season, and was called up to the bigs just days later. Now, he’s locked in Pittsburgh for the long haul.

The Pirates made clear they view Griffin as a cornerstone of the franchise alongside reigning NL Cy Young winner Paul Skenes. It’s a defining moment for a Pittsburgh organization that has spent years stockpiling talent, and it’s the kind of investment that shows that there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Griffin becomes one of the highest-paid players in Pirates history. The deal is reminiscent of similar extensions the sport has seen with generational talents — buy them out early, lock in the cost certainty, and build around them for a decade.

So far this season, Griffin is hitting .176 with no home runs and three RBIs at the MLB level. However, the teenager has brought an offensive skillset to the Pirates that the organization hasn’t seen in many years.

He’ll have a chance to turn it around against the Padres on Wednesday before a day off on Thursday. Griffin, Skenes, and the Pirates will kick off a three-game road trip against the Cubs at Wrigley Field this weekend before returning to Pittsburgh next week.
