It took a little time for the Righetti baseball team to get going on Tuesday afternoon.

But some timely hitting finally paid off.

After trailing for five innings, senior shortstop Mason Andersen singled over the infield to become the hero. He drove in two of the four runs that would give the Warriors an 8-5 come-from-behind victory against Cathedral High School, beginning the Central Coast Classic Spring Break Tournament.

“What you saw today was a lot of what we have been dealing with all year long,” coach Kyle Tognazzini said. “I just liked how the guys never quit and they showed their resolve. It looks ugly at times but they work together to get it done.

The top of the order didn’t have a productive day.

Already trailing by a pair of runs from a fielding error and a single to left field, the Warriors were retired in order on just four pitches.

Anderson’s younger brother, Zander, a sophomore, singled home two runs in the bottom of the second inning but the momentum wouldn’t last.

Cathedral, who plays out of the Camino Real League in the Southern Section, did not waste its opportunities.

Three consecutive RBI singles by the Phantoms in the top of the third inning put them right back on top and forced the Warriors to go to their bullpen.

While the top of Righetti’s batting order still struggled, Zander Andersen added another RBI with a double to right field sending Nolan Roberts home.

“I just kept my head down and stayed short with the ball,” Zander said.

Andersen had struggled from the plate going hitless in his last 12 at bats so he decided to change his walkup song to ‘Baby Shark’.

The popular kids song worked as the finished the game 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs.

“The top of the order has carried us all year so it was nice to see the bottom carry step up tonight,” Tognazzini said. “We knew eventually they would have a game like that.”

The Phantoms were able to get just one hit setting up the Warriors’ big sixth inning.

With a single, a walk and a fielder’s choice bunt that the umpire called the runner safe at third, the bases were loaded. After Dominic Nevares scored a run on a walk, Mason Andersen came through.

“I didn’t get try to do too much and stayed with the pitch,” said Andersen, who finished 1-for-4 with the two RBIs.

The Warriors plated a total of four runs in the inning that would ultimately give them their fifth victory.

Righetti has been in a dogfight throughout Mountain League play, two games out of first place behind St. Joseph and Arroyo Grande, so Tognazzini believes a small break and seeing other teams from out of the area is extremely beneficial.

“We can play more relaxed,” Tognazzini said. “You get so geared up to play teams around here where everybody knows everybody so it’s nice not having to do so much scouting report work that needs to be done.”

The Warriors continued their tournament schedule on Wednesday and Thursday with games against Bishop Montgomery and St. Francis and will play Maranatha on Friday.

Mountain League play resumes on April 15 against Morro Bay.
