Luis Gil is in danger of falling out of the Yankees’ rotation early in 2026.
The New York Yankees are set to take on the Tampa Bay Rays in a three-game weekend series. The Yankees are 8-4, and sit atop the American League East, for now.
On Friday, Luis Gil is set to make his first start of the 2026 season. The former AL Rookie of the Year had a shaky spring, and his rehab start didn’t go all that great either.
On April 5, Luis Gil went 4.2 innings and gave up three runs on four hits, but also walked four batters. Yankees fans may be holding their breath in the first game of the Rays series.

New York Yankees Make Luis Gil Roster Move
Before the Yankees three-game set with the Rays, the team announced that they have recalled RHP Luis Gil from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and DFA’d pitcher Cade Winquest.
Poor one out for Winquest, who made the Opening Day roster after a solid camp, but never got to make his MLB debut with the Yankees.
As for Luis Gil, he made 11 starts for the Yankees last year and boasted an ERA of 3.32 in 57 innings. Over 29 starts in his rookie season (2024), Luis Gil had an ERA of 3.50 over 150+ innings.
He’s battled with some injuries, and walks remains a bit of a concern. He walked 77 batters in 2025, and 33 last season.

Luis Gil’s Time with New York
Luis Gil made his MLB debut back in 2021 with the New York Yankees.
Over 6 starts in 2021, Luis Gil posted an ERA of 3.07 in 29.1 innings.
He has 255 strikeouts in 242 innings. He is 27 years old from Azua, Dominican Republic.
The Yankees have received quality pitching out of all their starters, which is why they are off to a good start.
Gil joining the rotation should help, but he could also be a weak link, which may draw speculation to his trade status.
