JP Sears struck out five but lasted just four innings in Triple-A El Paso’s 4-0 loss on Saturday to visiting Albuquerque.
Sears allowed three runs — two earned — on five hits, a walk and a hit batter. He threw 54 of his 85 pitches for strikes.
Sears was in competition for a spot in the back of the rotation deep into camp. He has a 4.73 ERA in three starts since he was optioned to El Paso.
Left-hander Yuki Matsui struck out a batter and allowed a run on two hits in an inning in continuing his rehab assignment. Matsui’s groin strain not only cost him Cactus League games, it barred him from pitching for Japan in the World Baseball Classic. He appeared in three games for El Paso.
Infielder Sung-Mun Song (oblique) did not start but entered the game as a pinch-runner.
Three of El Paso’s four hits were doubles from center fielder Jase Bowen (.971 OPS), right fielder Nick Schnell (.629 OPS) and catcher Anthony Vilar (.823 OPS).
El Paso is 6-8.
