ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The Georgia Bulldogs started the NCAA baseball regionals on the right foot Friday, crushing Binghamton 20-4.
Daniel Jackson and Tre Phelps led the Dawgs’ offense, each hitting two home runs. The two combined for more than half of Georgia’s runs; Jackson had six RBI and Phelps had five.
The pair got the offense started early, hitting home runs in the first inning to give the Dawgs a 5-0 lead; the Dawgs never looked back. They battered Binghamton with a constant stream of runs, scoring in six of eight innings.
Dawgs starter Leighton Finley tossed a stellar 6.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and striking out seven. Zack Brown pitched the remain 2.1 innings, giving up two runs on two hits.
Binghamton, by contrast, was forced to burn through much of their bullpen. Starter Brady Bouchard was pulled after 2.1 innings and giving up eight earned runs. The Bearcats were forced to use five bullpen arms, leaving them spent for a crucial game Saturday.
Georgia will play the winner of Friday’s game between Duke and Oklahoma State on Saturday. Binghamton will play the loser in a win-or-go-home game in the double elimination bracket.
