MILWAUKEE — Keibert Ruiz singled home two runs to break an eighth-inning tie and the Washington Nationals defeated Milwaukee 8-6 on Sunday to complete their first series sweep of the Brewers in 15 years.
Washington’s last sweep of the Brewers came in April 2011. The Nationals hadn’t swept the Brewers in Milwaukee since June 2006.
The Nationals recovered after allowing a tying, three-run home run to Gary Sanchez in the seventh.
Brice Turang hit two home runs and Jake Bauers also went deep for Milwaukee, which has lost five in a row for its longest skid since June 2023.
Washington’s James Wood homered for the fourth time in his last seven games.
CUBS 7, PIRATES 6 Michael Busch ended an 0-for-30 slide with a tying, two-run single in the eighth inning and Carson Kelly had a winning single in the ninth as the Chicago Cubs overcame a five-run deficit to beat Pittsburgh. Brandon Lowe hit a grand slam and another home run off Jameson Taillon, and Oneil Cruz homered leading off the game for Pittsburgh, which led 5-0 before third-inning home runs by Dansby Swanson and Moises Ballesteros against Bubba Chandler.
PADRES 7, ROCKIES 2 Ty France went 3 for 3 with a home run and scored three times as surging San Diego finished a four-game sweep of Colorado. Ramon Laureano hit a two-run home run and Jackson Merrill also went deep for the Padres, who have won five in a row and eight of nine. However, starting pitcher Nick Pivetta exited with right elbow stiffness in the fourth inning.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
MARINERS 6, ASTROS 1 Logan Gilbert (1-2) threw seven innings of one-run ball, and Seattle beat Houston to extend the Astros’ losing streak to seven. Luke Raley had three hits and two RBI for the Mariners, who won the first three games of the four-game series after a five-game losing streak.
RAYS 5, YANKEES 4 Drew Rasmussen allowed one hit in six scoreless innings, and Tampa Bay completed their first three-game sweep of the Yankees since 2021. Returning after missing time for the birth of his daughter, Rasmussen (1-0) struck out seven without a walk. The Rays moved above .500 for the first time this season at 8-7 and extended the Yankees’ losing streak to five games.
TWINS 8, BLUE JAYS 2 Tristan Gray hit a three-run home run, Kody Clemens added a home run and Minnesota beat Toronto. Taj Bradley (3-0) allowed 1 run and 5 hits in 5 innings to win his third consecutive start as the Twins took two of three from Toronto, bouncing back after failing to hold a 4-0 lead in Friday’s opener. Bradley walked four and struck out seven.
WHITE SOX 6, ROYALS 5 Tanner Murray hit his first major league home run, Colson Montgomery also connected and the Chicago White Sox outlasted Kansas City after the first pitch was pushed back 3 hours because of rain. Dustin Harris led off the seventh inning with a pinch-hit double and scored the tiebreaking run for the White Sox on a wild pitch by John Schreiber (0-2).
INTERLEAGUE
ANGELS 9, REDS 6 Jose Soriano struck out 10 over seven shutout innings to become the major leagues’ first four-game winner, and Los Angeles Angels beat the Reds for their first series victory at Cincinnati since 2007. Soriano (4-0) allowed two hits and three walks, throwing 106 pitches and lowering his big league-best ERA to 0.33. He became the first Angels pitcher to win his first four games since Jered Weaver won six in a row in 2011.
ATHLETICS 1, METS 0 Nick Kurtz hit his first home run this season, sending the Athletics to a victory and a three-game sweep of the slumping New York Mets. Aaron Civale (2-0) allowed four hits in 5 2/3 innings as the Athletics won their fifth in a row. They swept the Mets for the first time, immediately after winning a series against the Yankees in New York for the first time since 2016.
BRAVES 13, GUARDIANS 1 Jorge Mateo had four hits, Dominic Smith launched a two-run home run and Chris Sale cruised to his third win of the season as Atlanta pounded Cleveland. Sale (3-1) gave up a season-high eight hits in six innings but allowed just a home run by Rhys Hoskins leading off the sixth with the Braves in front 9-0.
ORIOLES 6, GIANTS 2 Samuel Basallo hit a two-run home run, Pete Alonso also drove in two runs and Baltimore defeated San Francisco. Baltimore has won five of six games and moved above .500 for the first time since its opening day victory. Casey Schmitt homered off the foul pole in left in the ninth inning as part of a three-hit day for the Giants, who dropped two of three to the Orioles. Baltimore starter Cade Povich (1-0) retired the first 12 batters and yielded one run in 6 2/3 innings on his 26th birthday. The left-hander allowed five hits and no walks and struck out five.
RED SOX 9, CARDINALS 3 Willson Contreras homered against his former team and matched a career high with four hits, leading Boston past St. Louis. Trevor Story also had four hits for the Red Sox. Contreras launched a two-run shot in the second inning and finished with three RBI. Jordan Walker hit his major league-leading seventh home run in the second for St. Louis.
TIGERS 8, MARLINS 2 Tarik Skubal outpitched Sandy Alcantara in a matchup of Cy Young Award winners, Dillon Dingler, Kevin McGonigle and Kerry Carpenter homered and Detroit earned a three-game sweep with awin over Miami. Skubal (2-2) retired the first nine batters he faced and the two-time reigning AL Cy Young winner had a no-hit bid broken up by Austin Slater’s bloop single with two outs in the sixth.
