NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Tulane baseball will likely need to win next month’s conference tournament to secure a regional appearance, head coach Jay Uhlman said.
The Green Wave are two-thirds of the way through the season. An at-large bid to the postseason appears unlikely, but Uhlman said the team must continue competing through the end of the regular season.
“One of our things this year was let’s not rely on the tournament to get into the postseason,” Uhlman said. “Let’s do our job and try to earn an at-large bid. So that’s gone.”
Uhlman said he has emphasized to players that games still matter even without at-large bid prospects.
“We’re not in at-large territory right now, but that doesn’t make Tuesday irrelevant,” Uhlman said. “Winners still want to win. The scoreboard’s still going to let you know if you played the game better than the other team. You have pride in your performance.”
Uhlman said the team needs to avoid treating remaining games as mere preparation for the conference tournament.
“This group needs every inning for the rest of the year to be able to create that consistency,” he said.
A conference tournament win would give Tulane its third regional appearance in the last four years.
