Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio has yet to make his 2026 debut since landing on the IL on Opening Day. On Friday, his latest injury update reveals he is taking his first steps toward eventually returning to action.

Reports indicate that Chourio, who is 22 years old, took his first swings since being placed on the IL with a fractured left hand, according to Brewers beat writer Curt Hogg. Chourio initially suffered the injury while representing Team Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic.

“Jackson Chourio progressed to taking swings for the first time today,” reported Hogg.

The three-year veteran’s original timeline for recovery was about two to four weeks from Opening Day. However, that timeline was elongated after Chourio experienced soreness in his left hand. He will have to participate in a rehab assignment before officially returning, but the fact that Chourio is taking swings now is a good sign that he will eventually return relatively soon.

With Christian Yelich also on the 10-day IL as well, the Brewers are relying on Brandon Lockridge, Garrett Mitchell, and Sal Frelick in the outfield. Jackson Chourio will likely reclaim his role in left field upon his return, which could be in early or mid-May.

Chourio made his major league debut in 2024 as a former No. 1 MLB prospect. His first two years with the Brewers were lights out, and he hasn’t even reached his career ceiling yet. He ended the 2025 season with 148 hits, 21 home runs, and 78 RBIs through 549 at-bats, giving him a .270 batting average and .308 OBP. He also stole 21 bases in the year.
