Rock Creek baseball continues to round into form, walking away from last week with two sweeps — at home versus Chapman (11-1, 11-1) on Tuesday and at Marysville (11-1, 16-9) on Thursday.
In Game 1, Rock Creek put up four runs in the bottom of the fourth before adding a fifth in the bottom of the second and then six more in the bottom of the fourth.
Jordy Scott had a three-hit day, including two home runs, followed by two for Jaxon Pendell, also including a home run. Blade Grieshaber and Brock Lubbers each had a double.
Palmer Martinie got the win on the mound, allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts in five innings.
In the second game, both teams scored a run in the first before the Mustangs added six in the second and third innings. Rock Creek finished things off with four more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Peter Martinie and Jesse Lies each had two hits each, including a double for Martinie. Wyatt Wells had a double while Jordy Scott hit his third home run of the day.
Luke Lee got the win, allowing one unearned run on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
Then on Thursday, Rock Creek got their third 11-1 result of the week with a seven-inning victory in the opening game versus Marysville.
The Mustangs led 6-1 through three innings and added three more in the top of the fifth and then two more in the top of the seventh.
Three Rock Creek batters had two hits, including Scott and Peter and Palmer Martinie. Scott, Peter Martinie and Ezra Spiller doubled.
Wells earned the win, allowing one unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts in six innings.
In the second game, a seven-run top of the first put the Mustangs out in front early. The Bulldogs got within four, 9-5, at the end of the fourth, but Rock Creek outscored Marysville 7-4 in the final three innings to secure the win.
No Mustang recorded more than one hit, including a double for Lubbers, but Wells reached base five times on walks, while Scott reach three times.
Crayton Deters earned the win in relief, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
The Mustangs will host Junction City on Tuesday.
Wamego
After splitting at home versus Concordia (2-12, 7-4) on Tuesday, the Red Raiders (8-6) reeled off three win on Friday and Saturday to win the Walkoff Wood Bat Tournament championship in St. Joseph, Mo.
Versus Concordia, the Red Raiders fell behind 2-1 after the first.
Wamego tied things up in the bottom of the third, but Concordia finished strong, scoring a combined 10 runs in the final four innings to give the Red Raiders the 10-run loss.
Tayton Griffin and Brodie Cottam each had two hits in the loss.
AJ Kunz earned the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits and two walks with a strikeout in five innings.
Then, in Game 2, Wamego snagged an early 7-1 lead and came away with a 7-4 victory in a game that was shortened to just four innings after Concordia used a pitcher who had just thrown 78 pitches on Friday.
The pitcher was required to have 4 days rest, but was used on 3 days rest, in violation of KSHSAA’s rest requirements for pitchers, which resulted in the forfeit of the game and the ejection of the player and the coach.
Nate Gallagher had three hits in the win followed by two for Griffin. Griffin and Macoy Moody each had a double.
Isaac Braun earned the win, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts.
The Red Raiders then made their way up to St. Joseph, where they beat three Missouri teams to earn the division title.
They opened with a 7-4 win over Maryville on Friday. After Wamego grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first, both teams were scoreless through the next three innings before the Red Raiders added two more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead.
Maryville scored four in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead, but Wamego responded back with four runs of their own in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.
Moody had three hits, including a double, while Gallagher, Griffin, Braune, Brandon Poell and Jacob Derouchey each had two.
Gallagher earned the win in relief, allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits with six strikeouts in four innings.
The Red Raiders then took down the California (Mo.) Pintos 12-6.
Both teams were scoreless through three innings before Wamego put up four runs in the bottom of the fourth. California jumped ahead with five runs in the top of the fifth, but Wamego answered right back with eight more runs in the bottom of the fifth to close out the win.
Poell had two hits, including a double, in the win. Moody and Gallagher also had doubles.
Levi Braun earned the win in relief, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts in three innings.
In the tournament final, Wamego topped Mid-Buchanan (Mo.) 8-6.
After scoring three runs in the bottom of the third, Mid-Buchanan scored six runs in the second, third and fourth innings to jump ahead 6-3. Wamego responded with five runs in the bottom of the fourth and held the Dragons scoreless in the final three innings for the win.
Gallagher had two hits in the win, including a double.
Cooper Niedfeldt earned the win in relief, going scoreless through 3 1/3 innings, allowing a hit and two walks with four strikeouts.
The Red Raiders will travel to Marysville on Tuesday.
Wabaunsee
The Chargers went 1-3 last week, suffering home sweep to West Franklin (12-6, 13-1) on Monday before splitting at Osage City (11-12, 11-3) on Thursday.
In opener versus West Franklin, the Falcons grabbed an early 3-0 lead after the first and Wabaunsee matched that in the bottom of the second.
Seven West Franklin runs scored in the fourth, fifth and sixth to put the Chargers behind, 12-3. Wabaunsee attempted a rally in the bottom of the seventh, but only scored three.
The Chargers were held to just four hits.
Starter Deacon Yocum earned the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks with five strikeouts in four innings.
In Game 2, West Franklin jumped ahead early with six runs in the first two innings. The Falcons finished things off with seven in the top of fifth for the five-inning victory.
Wabaunsee had just two hits in the game, including a double for Maddux Weisshaar.
Weisshaar also earned the loss, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits and two walks with a strikeout.
Wabaunsee attempt to bounce back on Thursday, and nearly had a come-from-behind victory in Game 1 at Osage City, but fell just a run short.
Osage City led 10-4 through four innings before Wabaunsee cut their lead to two with four runs in the top of the sixth. Osage City had two runs in the bottom of the sixth to bump their lead back up to four, 12-8. The Chargers scored three in the top seventh, but couldn’t get the tying run across.
Karsyn Shoffner had three hits in the loss. Conrad Cassell earned the loss, allowing eight runs (four earned) on eight hits and a walk with five strikeouts in three innings.
In Game 2, Wabaunsee jumped ahead with six runs in the first two innings. Osage responded with a single run in the bottom of the third, and the Chargers added two more runs in the top of the fourth. Wabaunsee scored three more runs in the top of the sixth, which ensured their first win of the week.
Maddux Weisshaar and Yocum each had two hits. Weisshaar had two doubles and Yocum and Lucas Viergever each had one.
Sawyer Ibarra earned the win, pitching two scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and five walks with three stirkeouts.
Wabaunsee will face Jefferson County North on Monday before traveling to Council Grove on Thursday.
Riley County
The Falcons (1-11) went 0-4 last week, falling in a sweep at St. Marys (5-1, 6-1) on Monday and at home versus Jefferson West (11-1, 13-6) on Thursday.
Versus the Bears, Riley County was held scoreless in Game 1 through the first six innings before scrapping across a run in the top of the seveneth.
Aiden Thompson had two hits, while Braeden Kraemer added a double.
Chase Lundberg earned the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts in five innings.
In the second game, the Falcons jumped ahead 1-0 after the first inning, but St. Marys pilled on six runs int he bottom of the second and held out the final five innings for the win.
Tyler Holmes had two hits, while Mikey Silva doubled.
Leland McCallister earned the loss, allowing six unearned runs on three hits and four walks with six strikeouts.
Two days later, the Falcons’ offensive struggles continued, scoring just one run in the opener versus Jefferson West, while the Tigers scored 10 runs in the first three innings.
Riley had jus two hits, while Colt Mongeau earned the loss, allowing 10 runs (six earned) on seven hits and six walks with five strikeouts.
In the econd game, both teams were tied at three through six innings before a 10-run top of the seventh for Jefferson West secured the victory. Riley’s rally was contained to just three runs in the bottom of the inning.
McCallister had two hits while Westin Anderson earned the loss in relief, allowing 11 runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.
Riley County will host Royal Valley on Monday before traveling to Silver Lake on Thursday before returning home on Friday to play Chapman.
