Manhattan High baseball used a pair of dominant performances to sweep its weekend trip to Garden City, defeating Garden City 14-1 on Friday before beating Dodge City 10-1 on Saturday.
The Indians pounded out 24 hits across the two games, getting standout efforts from Easton Duff and Asher Newton while also turning in strong outings on the mound.
In Friday’s opener, Manhattan broke things open early and never looked back in a 14-1 win over Garden City.
After a scoreless first, the Indians plated three runs in the second inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Duff, an RBI single from Riland Boyer and a run scored on a fielder’s choice by Jack Crocker.
Manhattan added two more in the third as Duff doubled home a run and Boyer followed with another RBI single to extend the lead.
In the fourth, the Newton brothers added runs back-to-back as Asher tripled, followed by a double from Sawyer. Jackson Goos singles to score Sawyer, bringing the Indians’ lead to 8-0.
The Indians put the game away in the sixth, erupting for six runs behind home runs from Asher Newton and Duff, including a grand slam from Duff to center field.
Duff led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with six RBIs, while Asher Newton also collected three hits. Boyer and Goos each added multiple hits as Manhattan finished with 12 hits, six walks and four stolen bases.
On the mound, Duff was just as sharp, allowing one run on one hit over six innings while striking out nine and walking one.
Game 2 followed a similar script, as Manhattan jumped on Dodge City early and controlled a 10-1 win.
Asher Newton set the tone immediately with a lead-off home run in the first inning, and the Indians added two more runs in the frame behind an RBI single from Goos and a sacrifice fly from Sawyer Newton.
Manhattan continued to build the lead in the second with RBIs from Gnirk and Goos, then added runs across the middle and late innings to create separation.
Newton led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, while Riland Boyer also collected three hits. Goos and Liam Nider each added multiple hits as Manhattan finished with 12 hits.
Gnirk delivered on the mound, tossing five hitless innings while striking out six and walking two to earn the win. Jack Keogh and Tyson Hattrup worked in relief to close out the game.
Manhattan played clean defensively in both games, committing no errors.
The Indians return home Wednesday to host Washburn Rural in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
