Nolan McLean, New York Mets vs. Minnesota Twins, $8,500 — McLean has been very fortunate to start the season with a .176 BABIP, but the 2.45 FIP supports the 2.28 ERA and the strikeout rate is a robust 31.5%. In addition, the average exit velocity is only 86.1 mph while the barrel rate is only 5.8%. He’s struck out at least eight batters in three of four starts and has not allowed more than two earned runs in any outing. In his most recent start, McLean stymied the vaunted Dodgers offense for seven innings, walking two, striking out eight and allowing only one earned run on two hits. He’s put up at least 19 FPTS in all four starts with three of those over 20 FPTS.
Value
Merrill Kelly, Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Chicago White Sox, $7,500 — Kelly made his season debut last Tuesday, going 5.1 innings, walking four, striking out three and allowing two earned runs on five hits. He was fortunate with a .250 BABIP and 92.1% strand rate. The FIP of 6.69 was much higher than the 3.38 ERA. The average exit velocity was 94.3 mph while the barrel rate was 17.6%. That said, it was his first start of the season after dealing with an injury and he threw 86 pitches. He’s going to be better. In 184 innings last season, Kelly posted a 3.76 FIP. Chicago is third in strikeouts, 25th in wOBA and 22nd in wRC+.

Brandon Lowe, Pittsburgh Pirates at Texas Rangers, $5,300 — Lowe has crushed right-handed pitching this season, slashing .347/.484/.796 with a .449 ISO! The wRC+ is 243 and six of seven home runs have come off righties. Lowe will likely bat second in the batting order. Kumar Rocker has a 6.63 FIP and 5.4% K-BB% and both home runs allowed have come off the bat of lefties.
Cole Young, Seattle Mariners vs. Athletics, $2,400 — Young bats eighth or ninth in the order, so that stinks. What he’s done against left-handed pitching this season, though, is the opposite of that. Granted, the sample size is small at 25 plate appearances, but Young is slashing .304/.360/.565 with a .261 ISO against lefties. In his young career, the wRC+ is 110 against left-handed pitching in 92 plate appearances. Jacob Lopez has faced 21 left-handed batters and allowed a .294/.429/.529 slash with a 7.05 FIP.

Jorge Soler, Los Angeles Angels vs. Toronto Blue Jays, $4,000 — Soler has a 34.9% strikeout rate but a .261 ISO and has hit five home runs. Four of those have come against right-handed pitching, but the wRC+ is 149 against left-handed pitching while the ISO is .231. In his career, Soler has been much more productive against left-handed pitching with a .259 ISO and 130 wRC+, compared to .205 and 105 respectively against righties. Patrick Corbin has faced 32 righties this season and allowed a .333/.406/.593 slash with two home runs. The K-BB% is onl 3.1% while the FIP is 8.18.
Myles Straw, Toronto Blue Jays at Los Angeles Angels, $2,000 — With Daulton Varsho injured, Straw has started the last three games and gone 3-for-11 with a home run, three runs and a RBI. I’m not buying the current .154 ISO, as Straw has never hit more than four home runs in a season. He does have excellent plate discipline, though, and the sprint speed is in the 94th percentile.
