Middleboro native Sean Newcomb has been traded to the Athletics, the Boston Red Sox announced Tuesday afternoon.

Boston received cash considerations in exchange for the left-handed pitcher. Newcomb made 12 appearances for his hometown ball club, including his debut on March 31. He made five starts with a 3.95 ERA, 18 earned runs allowed, and 41 strikeouts across 41 innings pitched.

Newcomb signed a minor league deal with Boston this offseason, and initially made the Red Sox starting pitching rotation as multiple pitchers dealt with injuries to begin the season. Newcomb is a Middleboro High School graduate, and was a first round pick in 2014, selected 15th overall by the Los Angeles Angels.

He made his Major League Baseball debut with the Atlanta Braves in 2017, and was a part of Atlanta’s regular season roster when the team won the 2021 World Series. Newcomb also spent a part of 2022 with the Chicago Cubs after he was traded by Atlanta.

Sean Newcomb’s Massachusetts roots

Newcomb was a three-sport athlete at Middleboro High, playing baseball, basketball and football. As a senior, he was an Enterprise All-Scholastic in all three sports.

After battling some injuries early in his collegiate career, Newcomb was a breakout star at the University of Hartford.

He was the America East and New England pitcher of the year in 2014 before the Los Angeles Angels drafted him in the first round with the 15th overall pick. That put Newcomb on the shortlist of local players selected in the first round of the MLB Draft along with Glenn Tufts of Bridgewater (No. 5 in 1973) and Greg McMurtry of Brockton (No. 14 in 1986) were the other locals selected.

He was the third Middleboro native drafted in recent decades, along with Detroit Tiger picks Kevin Brower (33rd round in 2004) and Tom Thornton (21st round in 2006).
