For the most part in the 2026 baseball season, the St. Mary’s Roughriders had all things working for them in pitching and hitting. On Monday, the Riders had their hitting going, but the pitching wasn’t there, and it cost them as the St. Henry Redskins had a couple of three-run innings en route to a 12-2 victory in a nonconference game played at K. C. Geiger Park.
“We have kind of got away in some games not playing our best,” Riders Head Coach Adam Graves said. “Today, we didn’t play our best, and when you play a good team like St. Henry, you have to play your best. We had eight hits tonight, and usually that will produce some runs for us, but tonight we couldn’t get those hits consecutively.”
The Redskins started right from the beginning of the game as they scored four runs in the top of the first.
With one out, Drew Langenkamp drew a walk, and Owen Zimmerman singled to the center. Both runners stole their next base, and both runners scored on a double to center by Jake Schwieterman.
Austin Zimmerman drew a walk, but Austin Kunk struck out. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and both runners scored on wild pitches to make the score 4-0.
The Riders were able to get one of those runs back in the bottom of the first on a two-out single to center by Preston Rupert, who scored Dyllan Fink, who singled.
In the third inning, St. Henry added another pair of runs.
With two outs, Jake Schwieterman singled to left, and Austin Zimmerman was hit by a pitch. Both runners scored on a double to left by Austin Kunk to make the score 6-1.
The Riders scored what proved to be their final run of the night when Kasey Gross doubled to center, and Rupert singled to right.
In the fourth inning, the Redskins loaded the bases on a pair of bunts and a single. Jack Huelsman scored on a wild pitch, Tate Boeckman scored on a sacrifice fly by Jake Schwieterman, and Austin Zimmerman singled to score Langenkamp.
St. Henry scored three more runs in the fifth inning on four singles and one wild pitch.
The Riders tried a comeback in the bottom of the fifth on a one-out single by Caleb Rohrbach and Gross, but Rupert and Luke Rammel ground out to end the game in five innings.
“It is one of those things that pitching and defense has been pretty strong for us this year, and our bats have been slow,” Graves said. “Today our bats were better, but the other things (pitching and defense) were not. It is one of those things that you have to play a good game, and we didn’t play our best game. St. Henry is a good team. Hopefully, the
guys see what happens when you don’t show up, and we have to be ready and bring everything we have tomorrow night against Defiance.”
Gross and Rupert were 2 for 3 at the plate for the Riders, with each having a single and Gross adding a double.
Preston Rupert started for the Riders and pitched four innings, giving up nine runs on eight hits. He walked four and struck out two. Owen Green pitched the final inning, giving up three runs on three hits and two walks.
