The Kansas City Royals will someday have a new stadium. The team is teaming up with Hallmark Cards for a massive private investment partnership project, that will include a new ballpark at Crown Center.
Hallmark and the Royals agreed to a plan that will bring about $2 billion in private investment, the team said in a release. It is the largest private investment in the city’s history.
“Our founder Ewing Kauffman wanted the Royals to be Kansas City’s forever, and he wanted the team to benefit his hometown as much as possible,” Royals CEO and Chairman John Sherman said. “Joining Hallmark with this project achieves both and extends the Hall family’s critical legacy of helping Kansas City grow.”
The new ballpark will be located in the downtown area of Kansas City. It also ensures that the Royals will remain in that city for years to come.
“When the new Royals stadium opens at Crown Center, something proud will come full circle,” Hallmark Cards Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors Don Hall Jr. said. “The iconic Royals crown that Hallmark created will return to the very neighborhood where it was conceived. Every time a fan walks through the stadium doors, they’ll be standing in a place shaped by Kansas City and Hallmark’s creative spirit.”
Royals fans have to be relieved to hear this. Another American League ball club, the Athletics, recently left Oakland after the team’s ownership couldn’t get a deal done with that city on a new stadium.
Royals have support to stay in Kansas City for years
There could be another funding source for the Royals as well if more money is needed.
“The Royals and city officials are also poised to access a sweeping funding package Missouri lawmakers approved last summer in an attempt to keep both the Royals and Kansas City Chiefs inside state lines. The law allows Missouri to pay for up to 50 (percent) of a new stadium for the team, but it’s unclear how much money the state will actually contribute,” The Kansas City Star reported.
This season, the Royals have a 8-16 overall record.
