La Cueva High School senior pitcher Dylan Blomker is earning recognition as one of New Mexico’s top high school players, with his talent drawing attention from colleges and MLB scouts ahead of the amateur draft in July. Blomker recently helped the Bears secure a win against Manzano, striking out nine batters and hitting a grand slam in his first at-bat of the game. “When I was about 10, I knew I was gonna be a baseball player,” Blomker said. Despite only starting to pitch in his sophomore year, Blomker has quickly become a standout player. “I used to be a catcher. Um, I was a catcher for my whole life, pretty much catcher and third base,” he said. His coach recognized his potential early on. “When you have the forecast for what he’s going to do and the upside that he has on the mound, it was a no-brainer,” his coach said. “One of the things that a lot of scouts like is just how easy the ball comes out of his hand to have that velocity and not have to be max effort all the time,” his coach added. Blomker has received interest from several colleges and committed to LSU as a junior. “Got quite a few phone calls from different schools, and I was really happy. So I mean, LSU kind of been my dream school, so I was really happy to see them,” Blomker said. Blomker has the potential to be the first New Mexico pitcher since 2022 to be drafted in the first three rounds of the MLB amateur draft, slated for July. “It’s cool, but there’s still so much work to be done. I mean, the draft’s only the first part of it. I still have to grind through the minor leagues and make it to the big leagues, so the draft’s only the first part of it,” Blomker said. Despite the attention, Blomker remains focused on the present, a mindset his family instilled in him. “They’ve taught me from a young age how to be a good person, and that’s always been the priority, is you can be a good baseball player, but you need to be a good student and a good person,” Blomker said. For now, Blomker is staying in the moment, game by game and pitch by pitch, as he continues to chase strike three on the mound. The MLB amateur draft begins July 11.
