The Seattle Mariners are set for a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals, with game one beginning at 5:15 p.m. PT on Friday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
The series against the Cardinals will be the first a six-game road trip for the Mariners, as well.

Before Seattle takes on St. Louis on the road, the former made an interesting trade involving a recently-jettisoned reliever.
According to a post on “X” from the Athletic’s baseball insider Ken Rosenthal, The Tampa Bay Rays acquired right-handed reliever Casey Legumina in a trade with the Mariners on Friday.
Seattle designated Legumina for assignment Tuesday and called up right-hander Alex Hoppe in a corresponding move.
In return for Legumina, the Mariners will receive right-handed minor league pitcher Ty Cummings according to a report from Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

Cummings originally began his career with Seattle. He was picked by the M’s in the seventh round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Campbell. He was dealt to the Rays officially Oct. 4, 2024, after being identified as the “player to be named later” in the trade that sent outfielder Randy Arozarena from the Rays to the Mariners on July 26, 2024.
Legumina was acquired by the Mariners in a Feb. 3, 2025, trade with the Cincinnati Reds. Seattle sent Cincinnati cash in return for Legumina’s services.

The 28-year-old righty showed decent stuff and good underlying numbers for Seattle, but it wasn’t able to translate to results on the field. In two seasons in the Pacific Northwest, Legumina posted a 5.43 ERA and had 64 strikeouts in 61.1 innings pitched across 56 appearances. Legumina had 48 outings with the M’s last season and eight this year before being DFA’d.
As for Cummings, his lone taste of pro ball with the Mariners came in 2024 with the High-A Everett AquaSox. The 24-year-old had a 4.17 ERA and struck out 124 batters in 116.2 innings pitched across 25 starts with Everett.
There’s still a question over whether or not Cummings will be either a low-end rotation starter or a multi-inning reliever, but he’s looked decent in both roles in the Rays’ minor league system.

Cummings had a 3.29 ERA and fanned 92 batters in 123 innings pitched across 29 appearances (20 starts) with the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits and Triple-A Durham Bulls in 2025.
This year, Cummings has made three appearances with the Biscuits. He has a 1.69 ERA and six strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched.
