Cabrillo High School’s softball team knew how important Tuesday’s game was against Orcutt Academy.

Just three games separate the five Sunset League teams with a week and a half left in the season.

Not to mention, the Conquistadors still had a bitter taste left from their six-run collapse the last time they played at Lakeview Middle School.

But the offense made sure history wouldn’t repeat itself.

All nine batters reached base as Cabrillo took down Orcutt with a 10-5 win on Tuesday afternoon.

The Conquistadors still hold a one-game lead over Paso Robles for first place in the Sunset League standings.

“This has been a really competitive league so I think this was a statement game for the girls,” Cabrillo coach Adrian Abayari said. “The girls really wanted to dominate.”

It didn’t take long for Cabrillo’s bats to get going.

Braylon Martinez laced a single to center field to drive home a pair of runs, followed by Kamila Aguiniga hitting an RBI-single to left field.

After plating three runs in the first inning, the Conquistadors added three more runs in the second inning thanks to three straight RBI hits that included a double to center by Leila Kiesling.

She finished the game with three hits and a pair of RBIs.

While Cabrillo’s offense kept driving in runs, its starting pitching was a different story.

Lily Pottle lasted just 1.2 innings, allowing three runs and walking five batters in the process.

Abayari made the call to bring in Alana Monreal and the momentum shifted back to Cabrillo.

Although it was only her second appearance pitching this season, she finished the game as if she’d been pitching all season. She gave up just one hit, one earned run and struck out nine batters.

“It was kind of a struggle because I haven’t pitched in some time, but my pitches were working,” Monreal said.

With the momentum shifting back towards Cabrillo the offense kept extending the lead as Kiesling and Marie Terrones came through with RBI hits.

“Seeing those outside pitches, they were really working for me today,” said Terrones, who has already verbally committed to NCAA Div. 2 Regis University in Denver.

Orcutt threatened with bases loaded in the fourth inning and two more runs in the bottom of the seventh that included a sacrifice fly to center field by Sofia Murillo, but another comeback did not happen.

Even though Cabrillo took the season series, Orcutt still has a chance to qualify for the CIF-Central Section playoffs if it can win two out of its next three games.

The Spartans play Pioneer Valley on Thursday and then Nipomo and Paso Robles next week.

Cabrillo will finish its season with a road game against Nipomo on Thursday and its final regular season home game against Pioneer Valley.

“We need keep focusing on the little things,” Abayari said. “Hopefully we can stay competitive and come through with playoffs coming up.”
