A walk-off single from Nathaniel Meurett sent Brandeis into the second round, but an altercation in the stands put a damper on the festivities.
The Broncos’ 6-5 win over Sotomayor on Friday at Northside Baseball Field #2 completed a sweep in their best-of-3 Class 6A Division II first-round playoff series.

Brandeis’ celebration was cut short following an altercation in the stands at the conclusion of the game. A fan was handcuffed by police, and the teams were escorted to their respective buses to return to their campuses.
Northside ISD had not responded to a request from the Express-News for further comment as of Friday night.

Brandeis held a 3-1 lead at the end of the third inning, but Sotomayor plated four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead as the Wildcats mounted an attempt to extend their season. That lead held heading into the bottom of the seventh.

A single from left fielder Chrystian Ramirez with two outs scored right fielder Grayson Hallmark to tie the game, setting up Meurett’s walk-off hit for the win.
“We knew that they were going to be able to not really back down and be able to handle the moment when it got there,” Brandeis coach Eric Jupe said of the final push in the seventh inning. “They knew that no moment was going to be too big for them.”
While Meurett got the biggest hit of the game, Jupe spread the credit around for what he saw as a team win. Brandeis starting pitcher TJ Byrd gave up just one run in five innings to help stake the Broncos to the early lead.

“He battled through some tough spots where they had guys in scoring position with less than two outs,” Jupe said.

Designated hitter Liam Fletcher also drew three walks Friday, and Brandeis scored in each of those innings.
“With just the series in general, we knew it was going to be competitive,” Jupe said. “They have a really good group of kids that are very talented. They’re coached well, and so we knew going into this series that it was going to be a tough one, and it was a great series.”
Brandeis will face Dripping Springs, which downed Cedar Park Vista Ridge in two games, next week in the second round.
